If you are not going to use the car for a long time having a battery master switch is a good idea. Even just leaving the doors open at a show, it prevents the battery from going dead (if you haven't switched to LED's). This is not necessary to "protect" any electronics. If you do not use the car regularly you should have a master switch and charge the battery for 1 day every 4 weeks to keep it "fresh". This takes a lot of load off the alternator since it does not have to always be charging a chronically under-charged battery.
