I think Nick's point here (and I'd tend to agree with him) is that having a door that only needs X inches of side clearance is pointless when X is less than the width of a human body.
 
IOW, just because your door needs 0" of side clearance doesn't mean you can park 0" from the cars on either side.

I seem to recall a BMW that had doors that dropped down into the sill.  And it's
hard to beat any minivan with sliding cargo doors...

typical gull-wing doors". You can't get less than the 13" required for
the DeLorean.
