I'm just being pedantic about terminology. It's a curse I carry -  having been raised by a mechanical engineer and now being one myself!

My favourite is that "plastic" is not a material, it's a property most polymers have.

True, except carbon fiber is not a metal, which can not be included  
in this topic for comparison...
