RE: [DML] Re: automatic transmission?

Rob Grady was out east here on Long Island today, stopped by the house to investigate the 'transmission' problem. I wasn't home, but rather over on Shelter Island, bike riding with a friend.

We were at lunch when Rob called, with good news and bad news. The good news was that I didn't have a transmission problem. The bad news was how silly I felt when he mentioned that my gas gauge isn't working.

Yes, my gas gauge. Yes, it is broken. I use the odometer, top off the tank around 200 miles on the trip meter. So either I didn't fill it full last time, or the trip meter got reset.

When one decelerates the gas in the tank moves forward, exposing the pickup, and the engine stalls, while at the same time the fuel pump makes a cavitation sound that could conceivably be interpreted as coming from the transmission.

Really.

Thank you, Rob.

You should do or have done a line pressure check. I would also check all of the external adjustments. If that didn't help then raise the car and with the wheels off the ground and the motor running in gear, carefully go under the car looking for the source of the noise. A partially plugged up filter can "starve" the fluid pump causing cavitation making a noise.

I drove it work on Friday, ~25 miles each way. On the way home, and near home, I had to slow down for a car making a turn. There was an odd sort of vibrating sound that seemed to come from the back of the car, and the engine stalled. I restarted, con
