[DML] Re: fresh air hole under windshield cowl -- is it just a hole?

I believe the water in your car is from the AC. The AC drain is probably clogged. This is very common, especially after 25 years the rubber gasket material, etc. deteriorates, falls apart and clogs the drain. It can be a pain to clear out sometimes.

The open hole you see has another drain for the rain and car wash water right over the fuel pump boot - which is why a good fuel pump boot is necessary too. This is the drain that can become clogged by leaves and trash. If this drain is clogged then water from rain and car washing can find its way into the car.
