FYI, the term "bully pulpit" does not mean what the previous exchange
between Mr. Espey and Mr. Levy would seem to have indicated. The term
"bully" comes from the time when the phrase "bully for you" meant
"good for you," with no hint of sarcasm as you might find today.
The term was coined by Teddy Roosevelt, who referred to the White
House as a "bully pulpit," by which he meant a terrific platform from
which to advocate an agenda. At the time, the word "bully" was a
commonly-used adjective meaning "superb" or "wonderful" -- a far more
common usage then than now.
The term "bully pulpit" has no relationship to the noun "bully," i.e.
a harasser or someone who intimidates.
