[DML] Re: Title Problems

One way would be to go back one more step to the person who's name is on the Title. Contact him and ask if he would file for a lost Title, sign it and send it to you skipping the last owner that never titled the car in his name. If you kept a copy of the Title you should have his information. If not you can do a DMV search in the State that the Title was issued in with the vin # of the car. It does cost money and takes time.
Another way is to go to one of the services that can title an untitled car. You can find them in Hemmings Motor News under "Services Offered". Not as preferable and more expensive but doable. Without a Title all you have is a pile of parts that happens to look like a car. You should have inspected the Title more carefully BEFORE buying the car. Now you have little-to-no recourse against John or the person he bought the car from.

Originally John had bought the car to part it out, but once he got it back to his shop he decided to sell it whole because it was too nice to part out. Due to the fact that John intended to part the car out he never paid a whole lot of attention to the title, and he just took the title the guy have him. The problem is that the person John bought the car from never registered the car in this name, but he signed the title he received from the previous owner as the buyer. So of course I couldn't register the car because someone else signed the title as the buyer.

So I ended up sending this guy the title for the car along with $100 to cover the costs of registering the car. I called the guy every few weeks for over a year and he constantly had excuses as to shy he hadn't been able to get the title yet. Well, this guy has since disappeared entirely along with the title and the money. So now I have a car, with no title at all.
