Synthetic oils still trap the same amount of crud as dinosaur juice. 
Synthetics also find leaks easier, so if you plan on weaning your D, I'd 
  make sure you have no potential for leaks first.

FWIW, I run straight 30-weight in summer and 10w30 in winter: DMC shop 
manual says 20w50, but Volvo changed their PRV recommendation in 1985, 
from 50 down to 30. In summer it's so hot where I live that there's no 
point in using a multi-viscosity oil.

Your mileage may vary...
