RE: [DML] Angle Drive

The angle drive I'm making if you saw the image is about twice the size of
the Smith which means the gears won't have one foot in the grave and the
other on a banana peel. I'm not making the same old thing with the same old
problems. The angle drive should never be considered something to worry
about as far as I am concerned.
I asked the factory what the MTBF ( Mean time between failure )is and he
told me about 1% over 100 units in 1 year. Naturally the cables need to be
clean, recommended the shorter cable and oiled and clean every now and then.
I am having a special grease put in them so the grease plug is not to be
used.

"Engineering" may be too strong of a word in this instance. This
modification was not dreamed up by a room full of PhD's -- it was cobbled
together by an unemployed railroad locomotive mechanic in his own driveway.
It also is not intended to last the lifetime of the vehicle -- it is just a
temporary fix that yields a reliably functioning speedometer until life
circumstances allow purchasing a true "engineered" solution.

A direct drive cable is infinitely superior to a tach xRef chart. I offer it
here as a suggestion for anyone in the same predicament as myself (broken
angle drive and no money for a replacement), and to inspire similarly
motivated owners to use their imaginations to fix whatever ails their little
cars. Given today's economy, what else can you do?
