Hi there, i have copies of the books about DeLorean and also his 
biography... not exactly sure about the passage your stating... 
however there were notes written by John mentioning the build 
quality... one example... 

"Our first cars come off the assembly line in March 1981.  I has 
expected them to be bad; I couldn't imagine them being that 
terrible!  Seventy or eighty unfinished models finally had to be 
taken over to the property fence and parked; nothing else could be 
done with them.  These were the cars our suppliers and our people 
learned on, our training cars."

(This is found on the first paragraph of Chapter 12 in "DeLorean".)

PS.  Most of the books (Except Stainless Steel Illusion) can be found 
on amazon for a couple dollars a peice, if you are interested in that 
sort of thing.
