Not for contest reasons, but for checking the car's condition, I use a 
spread sheet to keep track of miles, gallons tanked and convert that 
into miles per gallon per tank and miles per gallon from the start of 
using the car (overall mileage per gallon).

Should there be among you that want to use this spread sheet, mail me 
off list and I'll send a copy to you.
