The advantage of big wheels and skinny sidewalls on Esacalades and
300's?  Fashion.


Shorter sidewalls also make the ride stiffer, make the car react
faster to steering wheel motion, lower the flex when cornering, reduce
rolling resistance a tiny bit (not much)  Pretty appropriate goals for
a "performance" car.  

Mechanically, you can justify either setup, big wheels or big tires. 
One improves handling, the other improves comfort.
