I'm also unsure what you mean about a plastic piece.  It sounds like a
stiffener/trim piece that you found in your car when you disassembled
it.  I have worked with both original and fiberglass headliner sets for
the Delorean and neither one of those had this plastic strip.  I gather
from Martin's reaction that he has not seen it either.  This may be a
factory piece that only went into a few cars, or a clever upgrade by a
PO.  

 

Could you get us some more information on it?  It sounds like it serves
as a retainer, a stiffener, and a trim piece.
