Another thing to realize about the manuals is that they are written 
for mechanics.  A lot of stuff that is common knowledge among
mechanics is left out of the manuals.  Reminders like when to 
disconnect the battery or drain the fluid out of something, or
what kinds of sealants to use when putting things back together
are not always in the procedures - they aren't wrong, per se, 
just not complete.
