[DML] Major milestone in the Electric DeLorean project

Saturday, December 1st, 2007 - A major milestone in the electric DeLorean
project has been achieved today. Tom Neiland and I finished installing the
custom motor mount and there was little doubt in our minds as to what to do
next. We just HAD to drive it! Well it is registered and insured so why let
some little things like there's no rear fascia, bumper, lights or that thing
called a NY state inspection get in the way. We HAD to drive it. So drive it
we did. First we pushed it out of the garage and drove it up and down the
driveway a few times. Then it was off to the local testing grounds where we put
it through the gears. In 5th gear with 36 volts we got up to 20 MPH when
the speedometer stopped working. (Hey hasn't there been a recent flurry of
posts about angle drives?) Were confident that we can get to 88 MPH when we use
the full pack voltage of 156 Volts. Also note that we have NO controller in
the car so Tom WAS the controller. He sat on the back of the frame one
hand holding onto the rear frame support and the other hand connecting and
disconnecting the power to the motor.

He said it was fun back there and it was certainly fun up in the front. As
expected this baby is quite. If you want to know what its like, drive your
car and shut off the engine. That's what it sounds like, no engine. It also
braked like that since we haven't installed the vacuum pump for the brake
booster yet.

Anyway, this weekend, I will try to post some more pictures on our site
