mine may be better than most too.  Its had a proper front end alignment in the last year, the tires are kept at proper inflation, and I have Joe/Peter Kuchans front strut bar...  

I understand how to drive it, so does the wife, but she's not comfortable having to occasionally crank on it, and having to think about it the rest of the time.

She also wants an auto...  that much is easy.

No. just an expensive one. I only know of one car that's been done, 
and it's a right-hand drive conversion car that's currently in 
Singapore. I believe it's going to be removed due to the horrendous 
complexity of it. It would be nice to engineer a modern electrical 
power steering setup but I don't know of anyone who's done it. 

You'll find that the steering effort on DeLoreans is all over the 
place, depending mostly on tires and secondly on front end alignment.
