[DML] Re: Helping other Owners -was Joe

I am all for supporting Delorean owners. What I tried to point out in
my post is that occasionally an owner will come to a club event
driving an obviously unsafe and/or unreliable car. Sometimes through
ignorance but *sometimes* for the "pity" other more capable owners
would have. I prefer to say empathy rather than pity. In any case I
personally have seen where some cars are so bad and require so much
work that the car has to be left behind. In fairness to all of the
others who just want a look-over it is impossible to devote a lot of
time to any one car at a club event. That is my complaint. As a
practical matter we generally try to do what we can. In one case an
owner blew his radiator apart. He knew it was leaking but went on a
long trip anyway. Well, we had to leave him behind in Provincetown,
RI. Without a replacement radiator there was nothing we could do for
him. Another time "Evil Dan" spent the night replacing a clutch slave
cylinder almost missing dinner. When I held an event one owner's car
died about 1 mile from the shop in NJ. I went after him and jumpered
his RPM rely to get him in. Of course when you hold an event you feel
some responsabilty to the people who come to make sure they have a
good time and get home. There is a limit to what can be expected
though. Owners must do their part and prepare their car as best they
can BEFORE coming to ANY event. Hell, some don't even check their tire
pressures!!!!!!!! I started checking the tire pressures of every car
that would come to the events I ran. Less than 10% of the cars I
checked had all 4 tires CLOSE to the correct pressures! IMHO when any
group or club holds an event it should be MANDATORY that each car have
a basic safety check including tire pressures and lights. It is not
easy following a car on a rally when it's brake lights don't work! And
we all know how reliable the taillight boards are!
