RE: [DML] how long will battery last w/ no alternator

David:

There was a thread about this within the last year I believe, I recall
that someone made it 30 miles or so but tried no further. Search for it
and you will find it.

I'm guessing your trying to get from Vegas to Garden Grove? I'd make
darned sure I had AAA plus, you may be able to get within 100 miles and
then have it towed free the last of the way. I'd be surprised and
impressed if you could get all that way on a battery alone - but that's
just a guess.

Better advice would be to have a friend or any vaguely competent local
mechanic remove the alternator from your car and test it. It may be
fine and you may have a burned out bulb in your instrument cluster, if
the battery light burns out the alternator will never kick on. If the
alternatroe is certainly dead I'd send the alternator to have it
repaired rather than trying to drive it there, or if its dead just buy a
new one - oem or upgraded. Either way any mechanic worth $.05 can
install the alternator in the car, all you need is a metric socket set
and an extra (17mm?) wrench.

Depending on who you buy a replacement from the replacement may require
splicing a small wire. Even with that the alternator swaps out in about
45 or less.

As for your headlight question, Silverstars also come as sealed beam
headlights, just like the oem ones on the D. If you found them as bulbs,
that's just a different part of their same product line, keep looking.
I know Hervey sells them.

Subject: [DML] how long will battery last w/ no alternator

I'm going to try to make it the 3.5 hour drive to the shop to get my
alternator repaired. The alternator is putting out no power, so the
car is running off the battery 100%. If I am driving the car with no
accessories on, no a/c, and no lights, should the battery fully
charged last 3.5 hrs / 250 miles or am I going to get stuck?
