[DML] Re: What is the current recommendation for speedometer cable lube?

Actually grease is NOT recommneded. It gets too thick in cold weather
and with the cable turning it can actually "pump" to one end of the
cable. The recommended lubricant is "Speedometer Cable Lubricant"
which is graphite powder mixed in a liquid carrier like kerosene. You
can find it at the older large auto supplys. Not the chain stores like
Autozone. Very thin, very messy, but a good lube for the cable. To do
it remove the cable and lay it on some newspaper. Wipe it off. See
that the cable lays in a nice looping circle with no kinks or sharp
bends. Make sure none of the tiny wires is cut, frayed, or sticking
out, especially on the ends which must be tightly wound. Freely apply
the lube, wipe off the excess and carefully feed it back into the
outer cable, turning it as you insert it. Gloves and a lot of paper
towels are useful as the lubricant tends to get all over and is hard
to wash off your skin or the carpet. Don't forget to lube the angle
drive. While the wheel is off inspect the dust cap to make sure the
hole is square and the end of the cable that goes into the cap is not
fraying. If you don't have the lower speedometer cable support or if
it is broken get it replaced. The lower cable is easy, to do the upper
one you have to remove the cable from the speedo head end.
