Hi Steven and welcome to your new ownership!  That gook you are referring to
is most likely the remains of the fuel pump boot.  Leaving a DeLorean
sitting for a couple of years with gas in the tank will do that.

My car was like that too and the entire fuel system (minus the lines and
distributor) was replaced.  Luckily, it was not started before the bad gas
was discovered.

Make sure you get it all out of your tank.  If you use paper towels to clean
it up, count them going in and count them going out.

Your adventure is just beginning!
