Dale,

The early car came with a Dullcier alternator.  That alternator required the extra wire to 
sense system voltage for regulating. This wire would be used if you upgraded to a GM 
style (AC Delco) 105 amp alt.   The later VIN you have, came with the Motorola alternator.
 It does not require this wire.
