Whereas the UV dye won't - giving no indication of the source of the
leak.  I think you hit the nail on the head there...
 
My condensor hose has a terrible splice in it, and I have to add a few
oz. every 6 months or so (in Los Angeles air conditioning can be a year
round thing).  I have some real R-12 on hand but I'm saving it till
after I make the repair - using the cheap Freeze 12 in the meantime.

Has anyone ever seen a car with stock hoses hold R134 more than a year 
or two? Short of replacing all 3 hoses with modern barrier line, I'm 
not sure you can get it to hold. The R134 seems to go right through the 
hoses.
