Andy, It may not be as expensive as you may think. If the compressor is
good, then just change the oil and if will be fine. If you don't find any
leaks from the die, then it is most likely in the evaporator. The kit with
all you will need is $199.95. Here is the link.

Actually every year they add dye and they can never find any leaks  later.  
It doesn't leave any traces apparently.
 
I plan on rebuilding the entire A/C in a year or two, but I just need to
get 
through the summer.  That's why I was wondering where I am sitting,  short
of 
replacing everything due to age.

Your  main problem is that you system needs freon every spring, so it has
a leak  - you need to put in a UV dye/indicator (included in some Freons)
and use a  kit to find the leak(s),  or take it to a shop that has  a
sniffer.  Once the leaks are repaired, then you can worry  about
pressures and capacities.
