The 'free' type metal paint can openers you get at Lowes at the paint counter are good for the prying.  Long enough.  Blunt and can open a beer in a pinch.

You'll be pulling up parallel to the window, so it won't hurt the bottom 
edge tabs. Fir tree connectors are cheap, will probably be stripped and in need 
of replacement anyway no matter how carefully you pry off the top panel. I've 
done it with the window closed, but began anyway by cramming my beefy fingers 
in at the center and working carefully outward.
