Shannon,

Yes., that is the distributor advance solenoid and for proper performance 
and gas mileage it must be connected. It makes no difference how the 
electrical plug connects to it (no polarity concerns) but it is important 
thet tha vacuum lines connect exactly as shown in the diagrams as one of the 
two vac ports has a bleeder tro atmosphere and the other doesn't.

The electrical plug often has very little contact tension after 25 years or 
so and it is easy for it to fall off or be knocked off when working back 
there.
