[DML] Re: transmission

I'm curious about the failure mode on the 5-speed. What broke?

If the mainshaft nut backed off and drilled a hole in the back cover,
that's a pretty common failure that isn't based on driving style
(just sloppy assembly at the factory). I've seen several of those
now, and a couple more that were getting close but had not come
completely unscrewed. The nice thing is that it's a pretty easy fix
and you often can do it without even taking the transmission out of
the car.

It's pretty hard to break a stock trans with a stock engine, although
driving it with the stock clutch line in place can beat up the
sliding gears pretty good.
