[DML] luggage rack

Today I installed the luggage rack and I have to say that the 
installation went smoothly. As advised on here to read the directions 
twice; measure and drill only once.  Great advice.  I did run into a 
problem though.. When I cut the bottom of the rubber that the louvers 
sit on the hinges would not work.  Cutting it as instructed the layer 
over the top was too thick to allow the hinge to open and lay flat so 
the luggage rack can be mounted.  I just ended up cutting the rubber 
around each lugage rack mounting hinge and it works fine.  What did I 
do wrong?  Thanks,
