Gary, I'll add a little to what mike said. Not knowing how many miles are on
the car. Be sure the 02 sensor is good and the fuel mixture is adjusted
properly. If that is to far off then the mileage will be bad because your
running to rich.
I have car coming in to the shop that sound just like what you have and will
check all of what Gary said + the 02 and the cat. 
We are now selling the new performance catalytic converters that will help
the mileage and performance on a stock set up.
