[DML] Has the technology for painting stainless steel changed?

There is a right rear quarter panel at DMCH that was painted  burgundy...very 
nice, very "classy"
When you look at the QP you can still see the "zebra" stripes beneath  the 
paint. Very cool. Has the technology for painting stainless steel changed at  
all since 1981?
