I think it was Knut who came up with the solution to this a few years ago. 
You do the simple jumper wire just like has been discussed, but you also 
include a 10 ohm - 2 watt in line resistor (Radio Shack # 271-080) in this 
jumper. It dims the A/C panel lights to just the right level.
