[DML] Door Locks - relay failure?

This topic has been absolutely beat to death...but I've never seen an answer posted to this.

 

What IS the problem with the original Delorean door lock module?

 

Are the relays under-rated? 

 

I understand what happens when the lockmodule goes (solonoids burn out, driver gets locked in etc...) but have never had a clear explanation about why the problems occur.
