I've often considered the same thing, the tension on the struts and torsion bars is significant. I have heard of people removing the struts and/or relaxing the torsion bars for winter storage, but the potential for damage during the torsion bar process probably outweighs the benefit in most cases. The biggest obstacles are practical: there is no easy way to put a car cover on a DMC with the doors open; and this leaves the interior more vulnerable to creatures and airborne dirt. I saw the later post about the top seals, also a good point, but in most cars not an issue since they are already shot.
