my alternator (the motorola) has congealed goo under it too... It's been that way for at least three years and I haven't felt enough need to drop the cash on the brutish 150. I desire that big'un, but I haven't made the purchase yet. No failure, no purchase. Unfortunately.
 
I've often wondered what that goo is. It doesn't seem like oil, to me. It's rather sticky. I've thought it might be the stuff/insulation they use to seal around the wrappings melting out.
