Have you tried shorting the switch leads together
to make sure you don't have another electrical 
problem?

The reverse lamp switch is actuated by the 
shift forks in the gearbox.  If you are not
getting reverse fully engaged, the shift
fork may be missing the plunger on the
switch.  You should also make sure there
aren't any extra washers or seals on the
switch before you screw it into the
gearbox.
