I received mine yesterday Ken.  Thanks!  Another great installment.
For anyone who has not yet subscribed to this great magazine...what
are you waiting for?!  There is no valid reason not to subscribe to
this magazine if you love Deloreans.  Christmas is around the
corner...a subscription would be a great gift.

Relaxing at work and reading DCS Magazine,

Subject: Re: Automatic shifting troubles

I have to put my two cents in here because I too have
been blessed/cursed with an automatic.

Flame away at will

There werent many options available for me at the
time of purchase considering that my car was in near
perfect condition, with no major problems and no frame
rust.  That being said, I have come to the conclusion
that the only delorean folks who would really enjoy an
automatic (best suited for them) would be.

1.  People who cant drive stick, naturally

2.  Daily driver folks who drive the belt parkway from
staten island to brooklyn daily

3.  Those occasional drivers who are so worried about
driving the car that having an automatic is less to
focus on while driving.

Those in the group may remember back in may that i
was considering a transmission swapout for the 5 speed
and was urged not to do it because of the volume of
work required and modification to the frame.  That
being said I could see no reason to destroy an
original perfectly good car to swap out a working
transmission.

If I could find a delorean that was at the same
quality as mine and a 5 speed id trade it tommorrow,
because at the end of the day, even though it works,
its an automatic, its less powerfull and less economic
than the 5 speed, and quite frankly less fun to drive.
Elvis ruined me when he threw me the keys to his 81 5
speed 2 weeks ago at my house.

Speaking of Elvis, he rebuilds the AT gov and would be
a good person to speak to if your having AT computer
problems in Europe.  He had showed me his lab setup to
test at fix these modules.

I love owning and driving my delorean but no matter
how good the car is, or how it looks, or engine
condition etc.    It will always be inferior to a
5speed plain and simple.

BTW, Ill be damned if I will ever fix all of the
leaks on that thing, im almost half tempted to RTV the
auto pan seal to stop that beast from leaking.

AAAHHHH NOOO dont clog the Transmission filter with
RTV, yeah I know.

Anyway, that my thoughts and im stickin to it.

thanx

Ken,

You said you just painted a few fascias.  Are they for sale?  Based on the
price of the paint and labor, it might be cheaper to get one from you, and
possibly send you mine to paint with the next batch.

If the fluid is burned you should change it. You will never get all
the old fluid out. A pan change is about 2 1/2 guarts. That will be
enough to get you some good lubrication and seal protecion but not
loose the friction properties. Change it again in about 6,000 miles.
Use Dextron that is not synthetic for these changes. Drain the
differential too and see if any trans fluid has leaked into it.

I can't find the figures for DeLoreans with lowered suspension, but
according to a Car and Driver test in the '80s the DeLorean pulled .77 g on
a 282 ft skidpad.

hope this helps

They usually sell for a price of $1,000-$3,000 on eBay. With damage you'll be looking at the lower end of that spectrum. I'll have to get one eventually...

Ok everyone.  Today (Wednesday) I'm going to get the computer governor out of the car.  While everything is dissassembled and all, should I take out the old solenoids as well?  I mean, while it's all apart and all, might as well knock out 2 possible problem areas while the opportunity is available.  I know without a doubt I'm going to have the C/G rebuilt, but how many of you think I should just have the solenoids replaced as well?  I'm kind of curious as to what everyone here may think about that.  I have no problem with it, but I want to make sure I'm not making an overly-cautious move.  Please, once again everyone give me your opinions.  Thank you everyone for your time, attention, and suggestions.

A few years back I bought a set of delorean christmas cards. I thought the artwork with Santa standing next to a DMC was very well done. My family and friends loved getting them too. When I bought them they mentioned they were down to their last few boxes. Just wondering if anyone had any interst in reproducing them or who made them? With the holidays coming up its a nice touch. Although with 3 kiddies my wife tends to go with the photo christmas cards with their pics on them....

drive carefully...AAA says 36 million travlers on the road this week who are all potential targets for your DMC....

Interesting DeLorean occurrence:
While leaving a clients house, waiting for the front gate to open, I
saw between the metal gate a familiar shape cross in front of me,
driving on the street I was waiting to turn on to. When the gate
finally opened, curious, I sped up to try to catch a look at the car.

When I got closer to the car, I quickly realized it was another
DeLorean! I pulled next to the other D and rolled down my window, and
so did the other owner. I asked him "Do you think this has ever
happened?" We had a nice but quick conversation about our cars,
yelling through our pathetic windows but, comically, we were both
totally flustered by the freak coincidence of 2 DeLoreans meeting up
with eachother on the street .

Needless to say, It made my day.

Has this ever happened to anyone on the list?

Subject: Re: Replacing the solenoids?

The solenoids don't seem to fail all that often. You could do a
continuity check to make sure they aren't grounded and do have
continuity. The resistance on both of them should be the same (I have
to look up what it should be but in any case they should both be the
same). If it shifts at all then you can assume they work. Late
shifting, erratic shifting, missing shifts usually indicate a
misbehaving shift computer. I would leave the shift solenoids alone.
The wires and the plug becomes brittle and you will have to replace
the "O" ring seals if you remove them. Change the trans fluid and
clean out the pan and magnet. Clean the filter as per the procedure at
DMCNEWS.COM. The less you do inside the better. I would recomend
checking ALL of the external adjustments though. Follow the procedures
for checking the fluid level in the trans AND the final drive. While
you are under the car inspect the output seals on the final drive and
the C/V boots(4). If any of the boots are cut or torn they should be
replaced quickly and the joints cleaned and relubricated. Minor
wetness on the output seals isn't bad but if it is wet and dirty then
you need a seal and possibly the output flange. BTW you can remove the
shift computer without touching the solenoid wires or plug on the
trans. You remove the 3 large brass hex nuts in the round plug on the
firewall, remove the metal clip holding the wire and leave the wire to
the solenoids in the car. Just make sure to note which color wire goes
to which terminal.

Jeremiah,

Replace everything.

Filter, Fluid, Clean the magnet, Rebuilding the Transmission computer, or replace with a new computer. If your budget allows, replacing the computer and the solinoids should give you worry free driving.

I had to replace the RenaultR-30 Automatic transmission first DMC #3713 to the tune of $4,500. When the computers start to misbehave stop driving until you replace with an new computer.

Hey Gary,

Actually Ken was just giving me a hand.  I'm the one selling them.

For anyone who's interested, I've currently got about a dozen used front
and rear fascias for sale.  They have all been cleaned, patched, sanded,
primed and painted and are now ready to ship.  Asking $300 apiece...and
I'll consider a partial refund if you send me your old ones back.

They came out great, and I can send pictures to anyone who's
interested.  E-mail me privately at jhaldeman(at)fuse.net

Thanks, and have a great Thanksgiving everybody!

Nothing at all wrong with a silicone seal. Problem is people usually
install totally incorrectly. Requires *TWO* torquings. People usually
run a bead then torque to final setting. That not only squishes
silicone into places you don't want it to go (inside transmission pan
for example), but leaves nothing but a thin film between mating surfaces.

To make a silicone seal:
-run bead
-*GENTLY* torque (just enough to evenly distribute silicone between
mating surfaces)
-let it set overnight
-torque to final spec

You'll end up with a custom synthetic gasket.

BTW: I recommend high temp orange silicone over the blue stuff.

It's been nearly a month now since we received the books, and we've shipped
several hundred at this point. If you had an order placed, and have not
received it, please email me directly at "james (at) usadmc.com" - I
received an email from a client in France who had not yet received his copy,
and apparently it's been held up in customs there.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

This info is from a discussion on the DMC Forum list,
I thought there
might be some people on this list also interested in
the information,
I was enquiring about dyeing my carpets black to match
the black
seats, trim and headliners I have, and Ron Wester came
up with this
great source... a company in florida that makes carpet
sets for our
cars in any color!
The company name is Hydro-E-Lectric in Florida. The
cost is about
$359.00 but comes in different colors and is complete
with backing
pad. Their phone number is #941-639-0437
Thanks again Ron,
Best wishes,

The solenoid is in a completely different place (INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION)
than the computer governor, so nothing is actually going to be 'apart' to make it
easier to change the solenoid.  seriously, replace the computer first, and
THEN see what happens.  from what i have read on the list (i have a manual
trans), the A/T is just as good as the manual save for the governor, and the
solenoid is probably just fine.

sometimes it is good to replace parts while you are really in there, but you
need to drop the pan and the valve body (or get good access to it) in order to
change the solenoid.  that's way more work and incidental parts to replace
compared to the governor.

Subject: DeLorean drive with NSX owners this weekend

Anyone coming to Maryland, DC or Virginia for Thanksgiving is invited to be my guest for our local chapter of the Acura NSX owners club.

So far We have NSX's/M5's and an S2000 lined up, so if you'd like to invite a
friend with a cool car (or a cool friend with a car), please do so.

We have an AWESOME drive planned, including parts of Skyline Drive, Blue
Ridge Parkway, hi-speed Interstate and twisty uphill/downhill sections:

>From NO.VA.:    I-66 West to 29 South to Warrenton
>From MD (via Pt. of Rocks bridge)  15 South to 15/29 South to Warrenton.

At Warrenton, follow signs to 211 West (MD/VA people will meet in Warrenton
at 10 am!!!!  - call Howard's cell and I'll locate an easy spot to meet.
703.593.4273)

We'll take 211 West to Skyline Drive ($10 entry fee) and then proceed South,
exiting at the Swift Run Gap Exit onto Rte. 33 West toward Elkton, VA.  Then
we'll take 340 South to I-64 East and climb to the top of Afton Mountain.
We'll meet Lud at the Afton motel restaurant at 12:30 for lunch and
panoramic views.   ...and the obligatory photo op.

After lunch, we'll go South on the Blue Ridge Parkway, then head down the
mountain on 60 West toward Buena Vista.   >From there we'll hit I-81 North
and then I-64 East heading back up Afton Mountain.    This time atop Afton,
we'll take Skyline Drive NORTH until the first exit at Swift Run Gap.
(from there Lud will likely depart).    We'll take 33 East back to 29 North
and then head home.    I expect everyone to be back in the DC area by
5:30-7pm, depending on where you live.

Bring:   cell phone,  2-way radio (and an extra if you have it).

Please CALL me if you're going to make this drive (I won't have access to
email after Friday)

Chrysler group uses an RTV silicone on the bottom of their 3.3L and 3.8L
engines in minivans (mid 90's+).  i see hundreds of these vans a year and only a
handful have leaking transmission pans.  it takes forever to get the old goop
off the pan if you need to service it though.

Subject: Re: delorean christmas cards....

Don't go printing any more just yet.

Actually I was selling them as a fund-raiser for the DML (they came
with the operation from James). I still happen to have about 30 sets
left. But NO envelopes, they are a wierd size (A4?) that I have to
get from a specialty shop. If anyone's interested drop me a line.
Better act fast, between me shipping them out and then you mailing
them to people we're about out of time.

I put them back up for sale every couple of years, at least as long
as I have them, but I kind of forgot about it this year.

Here's the info - no other link provided, this offer only good until
Sunday November 30.
