Although I have never seen a Gold DeLorean in person, I do know that
there were two gold cars made for the American Express Catalog,
originaly the plan was for 100 of these to be made. The last vin was
a gold car using the spare parts from the American Express Cars, sold
to a guy in Maryland, the only automatic gold car. Dont quote me,
but i thought he sold it a while back, like a year ago with less than
700 miles on the odo, i saw that on the internet somewhere, i even
think its on the list archive, at a time when few were interested in
knowing about the gold cars. In 1984 or 1985 a Doctor had a regular
stainless steel car gold plated, so this would be the 4th car, but
not official DMC gold. I also believe there is a phony painted gold
DeLorean floating around somewhere too, a mockup of what the doctor
did in the mid 1980's. If you dig on the internet, you will find all
4 of these gold cars.
Also, of the two American express cars, One is gold interior (one in
Reno), one is black (Bank in Texas) and the Last vin using the spare
parts is gold interior. The Phony aftermarket gold plated car (#4)
is believed to be black interior, as far as I know.
I do not know the location of the last vin Gold car, but i do believe
it was sold in 2002 and moved out of state.

Well, Yes and NO!! That pin points it down better. I would just wonder
about the 4th person and having the panels gold plated. I know quite a bit
about gold plating and know it would NOT be like jewelry gold plating.....it
requires a huge tank to hold the hood, rear quarter etc. Then of course
the cost of the gold to do it all would seem it would not be practical at
all. I am a "doubting Thomas" I guess. Lets see, Ken is in contact with
one of the gold D owners for the Pidgeon Forge Show next June so we may find
out something from that angle. See you there!! We have our reservations!

PJ Grady recently dropped his price (as did just about
all the other vendors) as a result of DMCH lowering
their price. I don't think Grady's are the same as
DMCH's, though James Espey told me that DMCH's are
newly designed to the original factory specification.
Something about the dampening oil being bad after all.
I was looking at DeLorean One's site last night and
saw that they sell doors at $2759.66 EACH. The other
vendors sell them for $1000 each...maybe D1's are some
leftover "gold-plated" doors? :-)

All,
I suggest that if you store your car, as I do, you buy an extra set of
gas stuts and only use them for the months when you drive. If you leave
them on 12 months (and in the cold) they are compressed while in
non-use and it is felt by most that it could help to shorten their
lifespan. In the spring I re-install the "good" set and use them for
the summer driving season. Once late fall hits and the car goes into
the barn for the winter, the older set go on and the new set comes into
the house to hang in a warm closet. The "old" set are not totally blown
but just not as vibrant as the new ones. They are good enough to help
the door go up when I need to go in the car . Since it's usually
*really* cold here in Maine the doors sag terribly anyway so I'd rather
save my good set of struts. With the recent reduction is strut
prices it is more affordable to get another set as a back up
Also, Does anyone have a step by step for replacing a toll booth window?
I just bought a new glass with the plastic carrier on it and would
like to install it.

The brakelight switch is quite simple and can be pulled apart and fixed
quite easily. They tend to get stuck because the current for all 4 brake
lights goes through the switch. A bit of cleaning and it'll work fine
again. That said, a replacement switch is hardly expensive.

It is rather unusual for the otterstadt switch to fail so quickly and
in such rapid succession. I suggested the Fanzilla because I am
guessing that the fan relay is no longer there (jumpered out) so the
otterstadt switch is carrying the full load (that could be the cause
of the failures). I also don't know what fan fail relay or jumper is
in there so by recomending the Fanzilla it solves those problems. To
use the old style pipe you have to cut it shorter, rotate the pipe,
and replace the hose to the water pump. It is rare to see the older
version but never say never! I see many Deloreans that have not had
any of the recalls and still have the Ducey alternator. Remember I am
trying to help by remote control and the person asking for help
doesn't always clearly and fully explain the situation. I like the
Fanzilla because not only does it elagantly solve the origional wiring
design problems but it is also easy for almost anyone to install
themselves. BTW when installing the Fanzilla I recommend replacing the
otterstadt switch AND SEAL and circuit breaker.

If you're smart and patient you can find a nice "driver" DeLorean for that price range. The key is educating yourself about the cars so you know what to look for, and being able to hold off on buying the first one you see. I remember I wanted so badly to buy the first DeLorean I looked at. It was a gorgeous 1 owner car with 6k miles... cosmetically flawless. I could have walked away with it for less than $12k. Luckily I had made some friends in the DeLorean community, and drug them along to check out the car. The truth was though the car was beautiful to the eye, it was deteriorated badly from sitting for many years. That's the irony of these cars... they still look so new and modern... but they're over two decades old now.
What I advise you (and all perspective owners) to do is read the DML for at least a year before you purchase. During this time go to as many DeLorean meets as possible... big or small. Meet as many DML members as you can in your area, and look at as many potential car buys as possible. By familiarizing yourself with the car you begin to learn what to look for in them, and what is a good and bad deal. You learn your preferences in the cars as well.
I'm in the market right now for my second DeLorean. If you've read the list for a while, I was hit by a drunk driver in my DeLo about a month ago, and it was a total loss. I'm looking at buying a car in your price range... $15k-$20k. There's a total variety of cars in this range... garage queens that have been sitting for years with major mechanical issues, daily drivers with some cosmetic wear, but are good mechanically good, and finally there are cars that are a good comprimise of cosmetic looks and good running condition. Those are the hardest to find, but if you're persistent, you'll track one down. Good luck in your road to ownership, and remember that us list members are here to help you in any way possible.

I have decided to sell my only airbox left and also my only twin turbo air scoops. The airbox has some machine turned finish on it, but it can easily be sanded off if you don't like it. it is ready to bolt on instantly. $350 The twin turbo scoops simply double sided tape to the window and are vacum formed from lexan and have been painted black. $125
These are the only ones I have and I will never make more of them. Pictures of them are on my site. they are currently installed on the "delorean for sale" so go look at that car to see what you think.

OK... I've been wanting to start a thread on this for a while... I guess I'm feeling controversial. So I figured what better time than following the Monster Garage debate? So here we go. How does everyone feel about the current values of the DeLoreans... and what do they want to see happen to them in the future?
I bring this up because of a comment Ken Koncelik recently made replying to a post about me looking for a nice driver for under $20k. He responded by saying that I really can't find a nice driver for under $20k anymore. I was somewhat taken aback by this because this is simply another tactic people are employing to raise the DeLorean's values. A lot of people really want to see the car's values go up, so they put asking prices of their cars up high, and then drop little subtleties like this (I hope you don't take offense Ken... I'm just singling you out like I often do to Rich W).
Though I'm somewhat of a purist, I like the DeLorean's values just where they are right now. They're accessible to almost anyone who wants one bad enough. Anyone who's been in the hobby the past several years has noticed that DeLorean owners seem to get younger and younger. I think that's a great thing... those who are truly passionate about the cars can in fact own one! I'm sure most owners would like to see a decent return on their investments eventually. But I guess I'm in the minority in the fact that I'm really not thinking about that... and couldn't care less. I bought a DeLorean because I loved the car, and wouldn't have sold mine for any amount of money offered to me. So what's everyone elses opinions on the matter?

Subject: DMC Vandalized close to home
on my way to work today saw a DeLorean with 4 flat tires on a flatbed
infront of my mechanic's shop. Its funny I live in a small town and I
always see this other DeLorean, but never got a chance to meet the
owner. The machanic I use has never worked on a DMC before except to
inspect mine, and I only moved to town 3 years ago. he knows nothing
about the car (which is why I let him only inspect it) and was
shocked when he found out he had to order 2 diff size tires. anyway,
I work for the Police Department and found out that the kid who
slashed the tires is a big fan of Monster Garage and Jessie James is
his freakin Idol, so to say the least he slashed the tires "TO BE
LIKE JESSIE". its a shame, its bad enough they publicly humiliated
and compleatly DEMOLISHED 1.5 DeLoreans on National Tv, but its the
negitive image and example that really pisses me off. Im all for
modifing, my motto is i want the car of my dreams to be everything
i've dreamed of, but just destoying upsets me. I felt the same way
when I saw the time machine get hit by a train in BTTF3 and even
worse when i found out it wasnt the replica, but a real DMC packed
with c4. I blame the episode on JJ he had a terible attitude from the
begining and if he was into it from the start they wouldnt have
needed the second underbody and Im sure they could have pulled it off
with a good plan from the start (and maybe a real hovercraft expert).
Thank God that kid didnt have access to a tank!

As you may have expected, the final cut of the Delorean Hovercraft
Monster Garage episode was not what Delorean enthusiasts expected.
Attached is a link to my Discovery Channel online interview which
was done AFTER the build and BEFORE the episode was aired.
The interview explains what was going on behind the scenes and
may help some Delorean enthusiasts, at least for piece of mind.

As for the Delorean related details:
- all the panels on the donor car were dented and/or repaired panels
had been swapped with several other donor cars, except the doors
(Don and Dan, thanks for taking the time to do that the day before)
- no VINs were "lost" as a result of this build and the chopped up
underbody, chassis, drive-train, etc. were returned to Don afterward
so in effect, no complete Deloreans were destroyed due to the build
- the donor car windshield was already cracked before the build and
DMCH has plenty of other glass pieces, especially for rear quarters
and as most of you already know, DMCH has lots and lots of doors
Of all the things that happened in this build, I did not expect to
get ambushed the way we were on the 1st day at the design meeting.
There was a lot of great Delorean footage that was filmed for the
episode, as well as accurate fact tidbits (Monster Garage Factiods),
all of which were NOT USED in this episode. I was surprised that
they used more good Delorean footage in the Backyard Monsters
episode, and that was only background footage. It's amazing the
differences from what one producer puts together to another one.
I know a lot of people on this list are passionate about Deloreans,
so seeing anything Delorean related being destroyed is difficult,
but please keep it all in perspective. A show like this comes along
very infrequently and will have almost no impact on Delorean supply
when compared to Deloreans that are destroyed in accidents or good,
complete Deloreans that are parted out only for financial gain.
As for DML posts about MG referencing extreme customized Deloreans,
I think most people dream about their ideal Delorean being more than
a stock Delorean. The Delorean is all about Living the Dream, so
making the dream a reality is the next step. Keep the dream alive.

How many celebrities are out there who have owned a DeLorean at one time or
another?
The only one I'm aware of is KISS guitarist Ace Frehley, who evidently got

the early 1980s...)

I've been looking for a still of this for awhile, but haven't had any luck.
If you'll remember, a montage scene in Rocky III, where Rocky was endorsing
products, there was one shot of him sitting in a DeLorean... Might someone
have this pic they could send me?

You don't need to dip the parts to get the plating on them. I have a friend
who has a non-immersion gold plating system. I don't remember the name of
the equipment but it is from a German manufacture. He uses it mostly for
replating emblems while still on the car and he also does wheels for people.

Although I have never seen a Gold DeLorean in person, I do know that
there were two gold cars made for the American Express Catalog,
originaly the plan was for 100 of these to be made. The last vin was
a gold car using the spare parts from the American Express Cars, sold
to a guy in Maryland, the only automatic gold car. Dont quote me,
but i thought he sold it a while back, like a year ago with less than
700 miles on the odo, i saw that on the internet somewhere, i even
think its on the list archive, at a time when few were interested in
knowing about the gold cars. In 1984 or 1985 a Doctor had a regular
stainless steel car gold plated, so this would be the 4th car, but
not official DMC gold. I also believe there is a phony painted gold
DeLorean floating around somewhere too, a mockup of what the doctor
did in the mid 1980's. If you dig on the internet, you will find all
4 of these gold cars.
Also, of the two American express cars, One is gold interior (one in
Reno), one is black (Bank in Texas) and the Last vin using the spare
parts is gold interior. The Phony aftermarket gold plated car (#4)
is believed to be black interior, as far as I know.
I do not know the location of the last vin Gold car, but i do believe
it was sold in 2002 and moved out of state.

You should take a look at the Lift-O-Mat homepage. There's always the
same pressure inside the spring, no matter if compressed or not.
I mentioned it before - the German Delorean Club sells adjustable and
refillable gas struts. No more messing around with torsion bars !

I suggest that if you store your car, as I do, you buy an extra set of
gas stuts and only use them for the months when you drive. If you leave
them on 12 months (and in the cold) they are compressed while in
non-use and it is felt by most that it could help to shorten their
lifespan. ....

are a year they aren't much good. I've tried Grady's, same deal. He was
shocked and replaced them after about 6 months but the replacements behaved
the same in another 6 months.
I'm trying the new improved DMCH pkg next (need louvre struts anyway).

I believe at one time a Gold Delorean was owned by Harry Kaufmann Motor
Cars A.K.A.
Harry's Toy Store in Wisconsin. When i was younger my Mother worked for
him and told me he had purchased one Gold Delorean, she even stated he
said it had Gold lug nuts on it.
Harry Kaufmann used to sell lots of used Deloreans in the late 80's.
