Condensation forms inside your engine every time temperature drops.
Water vapor is largest single byproduct of combustion. Should be fine.

Exactly how deep into engine did you go? If you're talking about big
holes with O rings, those weren't combustion chambers themselves but
air ports into cylinder heads.

Rich Acuti can reassure about moisture inside engine. Had heads off
during monsoon season, no garage.

BTW: do ensure your spark plug wires have umbrella boots and are
correctly seated. Rain water can puddle inside plug wells and disrupt
ignition spark.

Am burning a replacement PRV already. Should some ill befall it, will
probably rustle up a running Volvo 760 series and simply transfer
block. Is no love lost between myself and the Fench/Swedes, but is
easiest way to keep my DeLo on the road.

Found replacing 460 in one of my Lincolns with earlier high
compression model (1969 into 1979) to be royal pain in the assets.
Headaches all caused merely by decade jump in model years. Everything
from timing chain cover forward had to be updated. Carburetor sat too
low to clear late model cruise control. Exhaust manifolds were too
big. Had to cojoin driveshafts to mate 1979 differential to 1969
transmission. Shift linkage turned around 180 degrees. List goes on...

Totally understand re-engining a DeLo if replacement block itself is
objective. Nothing less will satisfy. But if owner has ongoing problem
tuning PRV, or even has actual damage to engine, may want to ensure
all options on this side of the fence explored before rushing to
jetison block car was designed for (yes, I know PRV was not JZD's
first choice, but it's a lot closer to what cars left factory with
than Vortec's and Northstar's).

Thanks for all the advice!   I will check to see what my otterstat looks like tomorrow.

I have 3 service manuals but until I get the hood (trunk) open I am on my own.  After I
bought the car on Thursday evening I put the service manuals in there for safe
keeping on the way home.    On the way home the coolant hose blew off, and while I
was waiting for the car to cool down , I went to pop open the hood to get some tools
out and the hood release cable broke.  :  (  See posting that I left earlier today about
opening the hood.......

driver's side, which that hose you burst goes to.  it has two wires coming off of it.  it
is a temperature-sensitive switch that tells the cooling fans when to come on, so they
aren't running when they don't need to be.  i think this happens around 180-190
degF?  check the shop manual.   btw, if the wires are pointing upward, loosen both of
the clamps on each side and turn the pipe upside down so the switch is on the
bottom. this will eliminate bubble build-up on the switch which can cause the fans to
come on too late.

Expected someone to catch this. Thought about it later myself but
"send" button already pressed...

To test cold start valve simply swap electrical plug with warm up
regulator (which you already know is electrically OK). A lot easier
than running wires to jump start post and block. Apologies.

You're too tired to be typing David: fans are in the front...

One of those hose splices got me home from SEDOC. Ever since I added
the bracket that holds "upper radiator" hose away from AC belt
(missing from PO), otterstat pipe keeps tipping towards driver axle.
Somewhere on I-85 did just that. Axle wore a pin hole in hose
(remember: I replaced second pipe section with continuous hose).
Fortunately Louie G was following in separate vehicle and drove me to
Autozone minutes before closing. Bought splice kit with 1.25 and 1.5
inch PVC barbs (1.25 too small for hot hose but 1.5 was lubed & jambed
in). Will add to all the other stuff I travel with under hood, and
some proper 1.25" hose.

Am adding second bracket to otterstat pipe to maintain proper
orientation before Fall Foliage.

Jim,

Yea, I wanted to get rid of it because I couldn't figure out how to setup
the fuel system.....after racking my brain for about a week, I gave up but
then a VERY simple solution came to me after walking out into a machine
shop.  Looking back, I feel pretty stupid for letting that simple thing
almost make me give up on it.  Like I said, I didn't have many mechanical
skills back then so, considering everything else other than my brief delmima
with the fuel pump, it was fairly easy.  I guess on a scale of 1-10 with 10
being the hardest and taking into consideration I only had basic knowledge
of how things work on an automobile but decent knowledge of a DeLorean, I'd
say it was about a 5-6.

>> I found myself in the same position as you, why dump so much money into
> 20 year old technology?

This is very true and I think the main complaint I've heard from most
DeLorean owners is "Why doesn't it have more power?" or "How can I get more
power out of  my D?"  At the time I did mine, Houston didn't offer the
engine upgrade, however, in my case with the problems I was having, I knew
it wouldn't be cost effective to spend $5k on an upgrade to a motor that was
giving me problems.  Plus the engine swap allowed me to do things at my pace
money wise.  Also, the swap allowed me to have an engine that parts are
readily available and if I really got into a jam, almost any local shop
could help diagnose a Chevy easier than the PRV engine plus get more HP at
the same time.

Josh,

Two companies (that I know of) make Porsche-Chevy bellhousings.  One is
Kennedy Engineering www.kennedyeng.com and the other is Renegade Hybrids
www.renegadehybrids.com   I believe that Kennedy also makes other
bellhousings as well to mount to the Porsche transaxle.  I've been on the
Porsche boards for a while now and have heard really good things about both
companies.

Well it looks like my battle with the insurance company of the drunk driver who hit me is drawing to a close. I'm getting a really great replacement cost for VIN 10115, but I feel they're jerking us around with the buyback option. I remember reading that people on the list were saying that buyback can be as low as $300 on cars, but the insurance company is quoting me a number that is many many times that. So does anyone have any additional thoughts on the subject, or personal experiences?

Subject: Re: insurance buyback questions

Insurance company in business to make money. Is going to get as much
from salvage vehicle as possible. If it doesn't ask for higher dollar
figure, is guaranteed not to get it. Will ask high but hopefully agree
to something lower.

Whatever you do, don't show your hand. Insurance company has no idea
how much of vehicle is salvageable. They don't need to know. Tell them
story about DeLo windshields cracking because of plastic body, gas
slowly eating hole in tank, whatever. Just need to convince them you
want entire vehicle for future possibilities.

General public is so mortified when it discovers car not made of
stainless steel that could be promising line of reasoning.

Wonder if any of them would ever be open mided enough to notice that
plastic did pretty good job of saving your life?

$300 seems low. Given amount they're paying out, they must surely
suspect more than that in remaining vehicle. They just have no idea
where it is or how to sell it. Advantage: Louie. Of course they'll
have car. Advantage: insurance company.

Good Luck.

I had a really interesting experience a while back. Bill Robertson and myself were coming back from the SEDOC meet, and Bill's DeLorean decided to rupture a coolant hose in west Charlotte at about 10pm. For those who don't know, west Charlotte is a tad shady to say the least. Well while Bill was underneath his DeLorean repairing the hose and drowning in coolant, I held the flashlight for him so he could halfway see to work. During this time I had all sorts of vagrants and all other types of people come up and chat with me about the cars. Everyone was actually incredibly friendly and truly excited to see them.... until a guy I've named Sniffles came along... lol. He and his posse jumped out of their BMW convertible and came over and demanded that he buy the DeLorean I was driving on the spot. I explained to him that it was on loan to me for the weekend since I just wrecked mine, and I couldn't sell it to him. This didn't stop Sniffles... he said he had $20,000 in his car right now, and that he wanted to take it RIGHT NOW. He demanded I take him to the owners house, which I refused to do. We went round and round for about 20 minutes before he got the hint that he wasn't going to leave with the car... lol. He kept saying how awesome the "chrome" body was too... and I kept correcting him that it was stainless steel... but he had decided it was chrome, and I was wrong. He actually opened up the door at one point and plopped down into the seat. I was just amazed... I'd never seen anyone act like this in my entire life. I just didn't know how to react. I probably would have reacted a lot more negatively had I not been seriously outnumbered by his very large counterparts (I'm not tiny either... I'm about 6'3" tall). I don't think Bill ever heard a single word of the event. Well, Sniffles finally got bored with the car, and got peeved and told his buddies that he didn't want the thing anyways, and that "let's go get some sniffles and go to tha club," and they hopped in their car and sped off. Anyhow... I've had all sorts of crazy people come up and say the most rediculous things to me when driving a DeLorean... but this event takes the cake of the craziest encounter... lol.

Subject: San Diego British Car Day and Picnic - Oct. 5th

I'd like to invite everyone to come join me in Fallbrook this Sunday for the 24th Annual San Diego British Car Day and Picnic.  Information and directions can be found at http://www.sandiegobritishcarday.org/flyer03.html

This will be the 3rd year I've attended, and it's a lot of fun.  So far, Deloreans have always been in a separate category, so we compete only against ourselves for a fairly nice little trophy (even if it does say "Other")  Attendance is very high - I think somewhere around 300 cars - Mini's, a 3-wheeled Morgan, Rolls, Jags, Lotus (kind of fun to take a close look at our cousin, the Esprit, and compare/contrast), MGs, Austin-Healys, etc.  This event is sponsored by the same people who put on the Rolling British Car Show.  We attended that last spring and surprised the organizers with 9 Deloreans!  Help me surprise them again!

I was talking to an authorized Bosch mechanic with regard to my solution to
the 'lean at boost' problem. What I do is inject windshield washer fluid in
liberal amounts onto the turbo impeller whenever I am in positive boost.  It
cools the intake tract as well as adding fuel to the fire.  As well as it
works it would be nice to not need it.

The mechanic suggested modifying the Bosch mixture control unit by removing
the plunger and machining a little more taper into the plunger such that it
flowed more fuel at the higher air flows encountered at boost. Seemed
reasonable to me but before I attempt it I was wondering if anyone on the
DML has any experience with the process. This would be a irreversible mod to
a very expensive component.

Subject: Parts Updates

The SP10691 Pin Retainers are now in stock - these are the plastic clips
that hold the rocker panels in place. Many times they break when removed and
replacements had been unavailable for years. We now have these in stock.

Angle drives are in the final testing, and production should start in a week
or so. Expected availability by Thanksgiving. Pricing still being worked
out, but definitely less than $80 each.

The SSI reprint is complete, and the books are being bound now. Expected to
be on the water later this week, and in our hands by November 5. Orders will
be filled in the order received, so if you haven't pre-ordered your SSI, do
so now to avoid delays.

The first samples of the new lower ball joints have arrived and are being
evaluated. Expected availability is before the end of the year, with pricing
in the $30-40 range or less.

Watch for another update later this week or next about fuse boxes!

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Yeah, actually i figured that out before i read this too.  i found that the
cold start works when using the CPR wiring, so i ordered a new thermotime
switch and hopefully all will be good.

Subject: Re: insurance buyback questions

Some insurance companies have contract deals with salvage companies so
they get a flat price for every car they turn over. Others do it on a
case-by-case basis so they can try to maximize the value on each car.
The best advice is to just tell the adjuster your highest offer and
let him know you will buy the car back if they can't get more than
your offer. Most people in your position usually want nothing to do
with the totaled car. In this case we know why you want it but from a
purely economics point of view it is only worth so much and you are in
a better position to know what that is. You might suggest to the
adjuster to contact one of the Delorean venders to "educate" him on
the true value. In any case if they want too much you do have the
choice of saying no and moving on. At least you didn't have to cover
any deductible and you say they are being generous with the amount.
Make sure they paid for all the incidental costs too like towing,
storage, personal items lost or damaged, any personal injury and
medical bills, etc before you sign over the title. These can become
your responsablity if the insurance company doesn't pay. Don't forget
title costs, registration fees, and taxes on your replacement car. You
may be able to use that as leverage to reduce the salvage price. In
New Jersey when you register a car it costs the registration fee PLUS
6% of the price you pay for the car. If they give you a car for say
$15,000 to register it will cost around $60 for the registration but
the tax is $900. You forget because that was paid "up front". Even if
you transfer the plates you will have to pay the tax! Use that to
negotiate the salvage price!

The Key Car is a clever idea.

When I was in College a friend ask me what I would like for Christmas, I
said a Red Ferrari.

She gave me a "Key Car" which was the size of a Hot wheels and had a regular
sized key sticking in the back of it.  You squeeze the key and the car would
shoot forward.  It was a fun toy for those boring days in the design lab.

Let me know via direct email when you have additional "Key Cars" available
for sale.
