I had noticed that deloreantime.com had been updated a while back,
which gave me hope. But even more recently the site no longer works!?I
have tried it on 4 different computers. Does anyone know anything on
this subject.Despite my high hopes for the car, I have been led to
believe this project may be in some serious doubt.

You can add your car by filling out the form on the dmcnews website:
www.dmcnews.com/directory.html

Doing so adds you car to the VIN chronology and it adds you to the DeLorean
Owners Directory. After I confirm your entry, you can send a seperate
request for an access account to download your own copy of the Directory*.

* I first make sure your entry fits properly into the list, such as having a
VIN that matches the build dates of the other cars close to your VIN # and
that the car isn't already in the Directory under another name).

You've got some wrong numbers there... by your measure VIN 5000 is the first, and VIN 2104 is the last... lol. Here's the correct first and last-

First- SCEDT26T8BD000500
Last-  SCEDT26T8DD020104

If you look at Knut Grimsrud's summary of his study, it looks like there were actually around 9200 DeLoreans made :-) . http://www.dmcnews.com/faq/h_vins.htm

When I was looking at D's prior to buying #11174, 90% of the cars I saw had
hood dings that looked like something fell on them while in storage.  And hood
dings aren't always fixable, I gather. It's "stainless," not "undentable."

Hi everyone, I have been busy trying to put together details for the Mid
Atlantic club "Summer Fun Run".  Suffice to say, it is not easy planing
an event like this on such a short time frame.  Many of the ideas that I
had (and that were presented to me) did not work out, but after much
time spent I was finally able to put and event together.

Details can be found on the club web site events page (link below)

I need to start putting together a head count, so please RSVP to me
ASAP!   I will confirm details within a week and provide driving
directions.

For some years now, I have been hearing a high pitch sound from the
clutch. I know it is coming from the clutch because when I lightly
press down on the clutch pedal the sound goes away. I do not intend
to drive the car this way for the rest of its life so only having
heard from somebody a while back that the fall-out bearing is
causing the noise. If so, can an amateur garage mechanic like
myself, repair this problem??

I can put the brake pedal almost all the way down the first time,
then the second pump is only about halfway. This is after the car was
sitting for a weekend.

What part number is this check valve in the dmc parts guide?

While many shady happenings have happened in the past with big business
trying to crush the little guy, and so on, I can't believe that Carl Tilley is this
kind of "victim".

John DeLorean:
Former GM exec with a well proven track record of creating winning car
designs, and setting sales records. Leaves on bad terms with employer, and
challenges them at their own business. Created a legitimate company,
producing a physical, tangible product. Is put out of business amid great
controversy, and proof that foreign Govt. powers had conflicting interest with
his business "enemy", General Motors. Margaret Thacther's husband Dennis
is a MAJOR GM stockholder. This of course coupled with good 'ol fashioned,
bad management, are what do the company in. Soon after DMC goes under,
both GM, and Ford open up engine manufacturing plants in the same region.
And tainted Govt. interests opt to shut down plant, and destroy all body dies,
engineering plans, and spare parts that they could get ahold of, rather than
keep it open to provide jobs, and recover tax payer loss.

Carl Tilley:
Past criminal history, including convictions mostly for some form of fraud.
History of numerous scams as well. Has no tangible product to speak of, nor
has any development records. His "invention" for keeping batteries charged is
a silver box which collects static electricity, and diverts it into a bank of
batteries, to keep them charged. Even others whom have seen his car
operate state that the batteries are unable to keep a constant charge, and the
the device doesn't work. Blames expected failure of his product when shown
in public on a supposed "defect" in the DeLorean car. Best of all, this
technology that doesn't function as promised, is NOT even his!

So with that said, no, I have no sympathy for Carl Tilley. He isn't an inventor,
so much as he is a social engineer. His investors act more like followers, he
refuses to answer direct questions, and he's constantly running from the
police when having to answer to legal charges. JZD had is his brush with the
law in '82, and even made it thru a couple of bankruptcy cases. But each time
JZD stayed there, and faced those charges, and won, because he was right!
He didn't flee the state, like Tilley, or even the country like others have done in
the past. That takes a good amount of courage. Bravo to the man!

On the other hand, Tilley is both a fraud, and a coward. The man flees legal
prosecution because he knows that he is in the wrong. And when he has
been caught in the past, he's plea bargained his way out of things. According
to records, he doesn't even have a valid license, so no one can track him thru
the system. Not just for scamming people, but for damaging the image of the
DeLorean car, I hope the Govt. files suit against him, convicts him, and sends
him to Federal "Pound 'em in the @ss" prison for a long time!

A vast resource about Tilley and his folleys can be found at:

Subject: Heli-coil How-to

Ok. I worked on my other valve head until 11:30 last night. I have
the timing cover cleaned up, new crank seal installed. Valve cover
cleaned up.

The head went badly. As with the other head, someone long ago,
snapped off one exhaust stud. I had to dremel off one bolt. The
others snapped off. I did manage to extract all the studs but the old
broken off one. One stud welded itself to the exhaust manifold badly.
When I pried the manifold off the head, I thought the stud was
staying fixed in the block and the manifold was slipping off of it,
but what really happened, was the stud remained in the manifold and I
ripped the threads out of the head.

Now I don't care about the manifold. It's toast and I have a like-new
set. I want to install a heli-coil in the head because I don't think
there's enough metal left to tap it out.

Anyone know how to do this?

Rich

Take a look at http://www.recoil.com.au/

They produce and sell an M7x1.0 heli coils. You can buy a kit for about $35 ... Recoil Kits contain a HSS tap, installation tools, 10 precision stainless steel inserts and instructions in a sturdy reusable container.

That sound is most likely your throwout bearing

Subject: Re: ventilation behavior/ booster check valve

If your pedal goes to the floor the problem is NOT the vacuum check
valve. It's function is only to hold some vacuum for a short time
after the motor is shut down or during periods of low vacuum so you
would still have some boost for the pedal. The real problem is either
air in the brake system, a leak, or a bad master cylinder. You can
rule out a leak if the level never goes down. Inspect the front
bulkhead for moistness which would indicate a leaking master cylinder
which means it is bad. If it looks dry flush and bleed the brakes. If
that still won't correct the problem then the master cylinder is
leaking inside and must  be rebuilt or replaced. BTW you could pull
the vacuum hose off the booster and look inside the hose. If it is wet
that means the master cylinder is leaking into the booster which also
means you need to do the master cylinder. The tip-off is if the brake
fluid is going down, it only needs to be topped off if it is leaking
out (or over a long period of time to take up brake pad wear). If you
find you are always having to add fluid you have a leak which must be
fixed ASAP. Remember to try to use Castrol GTLMA DOT 4. Same stuff for
the clutch (if you have a 5-speed).

Subject: Re: High pitch sound from clutch

It is just a guess that it is the throwout bearing. Usually they make
noise when you step on the clutch, not the other way around. The way
you "fix" this is to remove the transmission and clutch. Normally you
just replace everything in the clutch including the throwout bearing.
It is also a good time to check over the transmission and replace the
oil, any leaking seals, roll pin, etc. This can be done by someone
with some skills on cars, it is not too difficult. The hardest part is
the physical removal of the transmission, it is large, awkward, and
heavy especially when working on jackstands and a creeper. With the
help of assistants it is not too bad, the transmission is not all that
big. Call one of the "D" venders and get all the clutch parts and info
before you start. While you are doing this job you also inspect the
C/V boots and depending on the car it is a good idea to remove the
half-shafts and relubricate the joints. If the clutch line has not
been upgraded to the braided hose that should be done too. Inspect the
clutch master and slave cylinders and if they are leaking they should
also be replaced at this time. At the very least they should be
flushed with fresh brake fluid. Finally after replacing the clutch and
trans go over the gearshift linkage. Clean, lubricate, and check the
adjustments. When ordering all these parts a good spare part to also
have is a pivot bolt for the shift linkage. If it ever breaks you
cannot shift. It is a "special" shoulder bolt and not easily available
when you need it on a weekend! Keep it in the glove box and if you
ever need it at least a mechanic could put it in for you. You should
definately have the Workshop Manual to guide you and a full set of
metric wrenches and sockets. A good flat level floor, creeper,
jackstands, and jack are also important. You can use the floor jack to
remove and replace the trans with your helpers holding the trans on
the jack as you handle the jack up and down. I have done the automatic
trans which is larger and heavier all by myself but the 5-speed is a
little harder because you have to go in and out of the clutch so
everything has to be very lined up, especially when reinstalling.

Subject: Re: Heli-coil How-to

Helicoils are the heat, especially in aluminum, especially around
cooling systems. Coil will weld itself to manifold etc, then fastener
will be steel on steel (like it should have been to begin with). Is
truly a one time fix.

Go slow and gentle tapping hole for helicoil. Aluminum is SOFT. You'll
be amazed how little effort is needed.

Most parts houses stock English sizes only. McMaster Carr sells every
coil made (with FedEx standard shipping): www.mcmaster.com. Their
*ENTIRE* 3,000 page paper catalog is online BTW. While you're there
check out the selection of pipe fittings INCLUDING BRITISH THREAD.
Fastener selection ain't bad either. Only thing they they can't get is
7mm stainless steel (see Fastenal for those).

Oh, you wanted "how-to":
1) Drill out broken fastener. Isn't end of the world if bit wanders a
LITTLE because helicoil about 1/16" bigger than fastener.
2) Tap hole for helicoil. English coils are next bolt size up (5/16"
helicoil uses 3/8" thread). Don't know if metrics are same.
3) Screw in helicoil. Is a special tool for this, but I just catch
internal tab with a skinny flat screwdriver. Don't forget to snap tab
off after coil seated (is scored already -- just hit it with
screwdriver). If hole is deeper than your insert simply bottom out one
then follow with another. Can cut coils for 100% fit.
4) Reattach whatever.
