You gotta be kiddin me, the car has simple systems. Compared to a
modern car it's child play. Fickle is another story but fickle does
not imply complexity.

How can the car be simple and yet fickle? Thats even simpler: Bad
design and execution. Or bad maintenance during it's lifetime.

But overly complex? Not even close. Complexity is in the brain of the
beholder, it's all a matter of how much you're willing to learn and
how much effort you put into keeping it from being fickle.

Anybody have any tips on removing and reinstalling the
rear wheel bearings?  Just so you know, I haven't
touched the originals yet, so I don't yet know how
firmly they're planted in the bearing carriers.  Any
tips on techniques, tools used/fabricated would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Subject: DeLo Design, Use, Etc (Re: Delorean complex?)

Louie didn't compare to modern cars -- compared to cars its senior (by
up to 20 years), which ARE more simply engineered (which also makes
them less refined...)

I think a lot of DeLo fickleness comes from cars being driven too
little. Is unnatural for 22 year old cars to have 15K - 20K on
odometer.  As I'm discovering with rehab on my shoulder, if something
isn't exercised regularly it very quickly loses ability to perform as
designed.

DeLo's seem to suffer a viscious cycle: car is driven too little,
which compromises integrity. A compromised component ultimately fails,
which scares owner and causes car to sit undriven even longer,
compromising integrity even further. Cycle repeats itself until car
has reputation of being unreliable etc.

Re: DeLo design -- remember, we're all driving around in glorified
prototypes. Product line was terminated long before maturity. Wonder
isn't that car has design flaws. Wonder is that it isn't riddled with
them! Is amazing DMC was able to come so close to the mark right out
starting gate, especially since this wasn't just a first year model,
but a totally new product.

Subject: Transmission Questions

Greetings again,
After a complete engine rebuild, I finally have the engine running properly on VIN#4761. The engine now runs beautifully, so we decided to take it out of the garage and take it out for a spin. The engine performed flawlessly, however the transmission isn't shifting correctly, so once again I am going to have to park the car until I can get this worked out. The previous owner had warped the heads on the car, and when parked the transmission was supposidly just fine. The tranmission fluid was drained and replaced within the last couple of months. Here is what happened...

I took it out about a week ago for the first time and I noticed right away that the tranny seemed to be jumping around inbetween 1st and 2nd at low speeds (around 25 - 35 mph). I didn't want to damage the transmission so after about 1/2 mile I turned around and headed back to the shop. On the way back the erratic shifting cleared up and I drove it for over an hour with no issues at all.

We finished up some final work on the car this week (new alternator, belts, installed a set of stainless fuel lines, and did some maintenance on the steering rack) and I took it out again last night. Initially all seemed great, no problems shifting through first, second, or third and I brought the car up to 55mph. I then brought it up to 65, and all was good and about five minutes into it the car started shifting between 2nd and 3rd erratically this time.

I tried it again this morning and the same thing...If I shift the car manually (start in 1st, shift to 2nd, then 3rd) it will stay in 1st and 2nd fine, but once I go into third/Drive it starts shifting back and forth between second and third. It seems when I left off the accelerator it will tend to do the odd shifting, but it will do it occasionally when just driving along as well.

Very disappointing, I have hundreds of hours into the car and have spent almost $10K to restore and put the car back on the road. I'm good with engines, but drive train is another thing. Can anyone give me some guidance on how to trouble shoot this, or where to start? I know the shift computer on these cars are notorious for having problems, is there a way to determine if that is the problem or if it is something internal?

Thanks,
Mike Polzin

The Delorean is not a complex car per se, it is just different. This
reminded me of a saying someone once said, "Any technology that you
don't understand is indistiguishable from MAGIC". If the car is
complex to you either you need to study it more or have someone who is
familiar with it do the work on it for you. I wouldn't recomend
learning auto mechanics on a Delorean, there are simpler cars to begin
on but in comparison to a "modern" car with computers, automated
lighting,  safety systems like air bags and ABS brakes, multipexed
circuits, cell phones, GPS, and entertainment systems, the Delorean
looks archaic and dated. I agree the car has some quirks and weak
points but by now they are well known and completely fixable.

Hey all,

I've only spoken to a few of you and I am new to the whole 'D'
experience but this site has been incredibly informative in helping
me bring my DeLorean back from museum-death condition (fuel issues).
I'm fortunate to have some pretty sharp people here locally that have
also helped out immensely. Anyway, I had scheduled some assistance
from one of those sharp folks (Dan P) when I decided, 'why not turn
it into a tech session/gathering'? Well you can't have a tech session
without some techies so I enlisted the help of Dan and Dave Stragand
(most noticeably of www.projectvixen.com fame), both of these guys
have been a ton of help to me personally with the revival. Here's the
deal, I will be doing several projects that day myself (with Dan):

Change rear springs
Change Accumulator, rear hose and clamp
Change TABs
Change Angle Drive
Adjust Passenger side torsion bar
Check Emissions for adjusting lean/rich mixture

If you're nearby you're welcome to stop by just to swap information,
watch, or if you need some help on a project you were working on.
Dave S. will be bringing the equipent to do torsion bar adjustments
and possibly some equipment for emissions testing. Depending on the
amount of people, I will providing basic food and beverages.
Significant others are welcome and encouraged. Please email me off-
list to let me know if you would like to attend, where you are coming
from, and I will send you directions. Also, it might be a good idea
to know what project you would like help so that we can see if it's
feasible and if we have the tools. Look forward to meeting anyone
that can attend.

Subject: Heater Advice

I have a question I'm hoping can be answered or at least you all can
steer me in the right direction.

My A/C is out, which may not end up being such a bad thing, since it
has helped me notice that with the fan on, heat setting to cold, and
selector in any position, I get cold air out of the vents, but heat
from under the dash. It is not blowing that I can feel, there is just
heat emanating from there. It makes the D unbearable to drive without
A/C here in central Florida.

However, when I turn off the fan, the temperature with the windows
open is bearable. Only with fan on does it get real hot in the car.

A friend suggested that my "hot water valve," might not be working.
This is the valve in the heater core line, with the odd looking
vacuum operated valve just forward of the engine on the passenger
side.

Any body have any dealings with this or can offer me advice on how to
test? I figure I'll need to pull it out, which is a bummer since I
just got it all bled after I installed my own version of the auto
bleed (with clear tubing).

Thanks,
Dan in Cocoa (3932)

One thing to remember about the production of the DeLorean is that it
required no paint. A modern paint shop in a high production auto plant at
that time probably cost over $100 million not even thinking about the added complications and quality issues. Also, the plastic underbody was

fitted with the stainless panels without expensive alignment tooling. (even
if we love the car we've got to admit that this fact shows on most cars). It
was a quick and less complicated start up, at least compaired to modern high capacity assembly plants. Some of this was necessitated because DeLorean had relied on Lotus to develop many of the assembly procedures and components. Lotus had a vast engineering experiance but no high production back ground. With investors fidgeting in the wings and Lotus moving at a too slow pace, things got pushed ahead before a more sophisticated assembly process could be implimented. With all that in mind, yes,it is amazing they came as close to the mark as they did.

Dan - I don't have any latent knowledge regarding the valve that you
are asking about, but I did feel it necessary to comment on the last
bit of information that you shared.  When I first developed the
self-bleeder concept for PNDC back in the spring of 1994, I used clear
vinyl tubing so that I could actually see the bubbles being moved
through the system.  Due to the high pressures (15 PSI) and the high
temperatures (195 degrees F) the tubing that I used finally failed,
leaving me beside the freeway with green blood everywhere.  If you use
these types of tubing, you must ensure that it is rated for the
environment that it will be asked to operate in.  I used the best
fiber reinforced clear tubing that I could find, and it was still not
nearly adequate.  If you've found something that will work, I would be
interested in learning about it ... it is actually very satisfying to
see the bubbles flow.  Just a thought ...

I ordered a new throw out bearing for a DeLorean that I'm working on and
noticed that it slides on the clutch fork.  On one side of the bearing,
there is a small bracket that slides onto the clutch fork, however, on the
other side, there is nothing.   I compared both the stock bearing and the
new one (from PJ Grady) and they both look the same so I'm guessing
something is just missing off the clutch fork or its broken?  I looked at
the parts catalog but didn't notice anything special in the diagram for the
clutch fork.  Am I missing something?

Here is a pic of the bearing:

Thanks for any help!

Mike, The only thing I know to do is send it to me for a components up date.

Mike

It sounds like gears 1 and 2 are ok based on your note. Take the
transmission fuse out (13) and this will cause the transmission to
lock itself into 3rd gear. The transcomputer will be inoperative. It
will be a little slow to take off but you will know if 3rd gear is
ok. If it is then you can be 99 percent sure the transcomputer has
done it thing to fail.

Replace it or, you might call John Hervey. When I talked to him at
the DMCH open house he told me he had rebuilt one which was now
working fine. He had located replacements of the pieces that usually
go bad. He might be able to help you out or repair it for you. Also,
since it sounds like you are pretty handy in the fix-it department,
you might want to check out the articles on the transcomputer repair
on this web site.

A long running debate that has come up here on the DML is "Based upon
what repairs needed, at what point does a project car become a parts car?"
So by asking that one question, the car that you want ended up becoming a
focal point for the debate, and the original question itself was overlooked.

Naturally, you'll need to really inspect the car first hand to see what parts are
missing, damaged, and salvagable. But off hand, you're probably looking at
an entire new fuel system. From the Pick-Screen in the fuel tank, all the way
back to the injectors themselves. And of course the typical new battery,
cleaning electrical connections, cleaning out of the gas tank, and the metal
fuel lines. The good news is that prices on critical components such as the
Control Pressure Regulator (CPR), and the Fuel Distributor have fallen WAY
down since even I purchased my car 3 years ago. DMCH wants $500 for the
Fuel Distributor for example, and 3 years ago that part was over $1K! The bad
news is that you may not have the core parts to exchange them. The CPR for
example is a $125 core charge last time I checked, so that's extra $ you'll
have to pay out. Unless you can obtain a core first, or can locate the part. The
big ticket items like that are easy, it's just all those damn little things that rack
the price up quickly such as the injectors (which *might* be able to be reused
if they could be cleaned), and those fuel hoses connecting all of the
components @ around $40 each.

Like I say, some parts might be able to be reused, so your very well may be
able to save some cash/effort here and there. Otherwise, I'd reccomend to just
run a couple of pressure tests on both the cooling system, and the engine
cylinders to check those out. Aside from that, just use reguar procedures of
lubing the cylinders, and turing the engine a few times by hand to bring it back
to life, and the engine should run. You might also be able to get some of the
components used from others here online that have them of course. Before I'd
take it out on the road though, I'd blow out the cooling system, and spring for a
brand new set of rubber hoses. So chalk up another $200 there. Bolt back on
the body panels, and reassemble what you can, and then the car should be
able to move under it's own power, relatively safely.

Otherwise, you'll just have to wait and see if any unexpected "surprises"
appear that you'll need to fix.

The early 1981 cars such as this one came from the
factory with dark gray wheels and not silver like the
later cars most of us have.
