Well my brother in law checked out the Delorean in Franklin
for sale on ebay. The radio does not work, is that a major
problem? Could that be a fuse? Another quirk the car has is
if you use the power door locks while the car is running it
kills the engine, what does that mean?? It needs door
struts becuase they do not stay up on their own. They used
the Checklist to go over the car. It had a couple of dents
but I don't think it could be too major, except the one of
the famous left front fender.

I have and engine, trans and frame from a DeLorean that was torched. The
car had no miles on it so the owner insured it for $100,000 and then tried
to collect on the insurance money. He ended up in jail.
The frame is complete but the paint is burned off and has surface rust.
The engine has the plastic component burnt off but is a zero mile engine.
The transmission should be fine, just so surface corrosion from sitting in
the junk yard for 10years.

My fuel pump is working properly again! Below is the diagnosis of this common
problem, which I *thought* was caused by a faulty inertia switch bypass.

Many thanks to all the DMLers who responded, but it was actually Warren at DMC
Houston who tipped me off to this solution. Apparently these electrical
connections wear out frequently, and original replacements are not available.
It's just as well, since the new connector I installed should last much longer
than the original.
Unfortunately, now my water pump has developed a small leak. I suppose at 60k
miles it was just about my time. I have ordered a replacement, but I might not
get it installed before I am scheduled to be at a car cruise this Saturday. If
anyone sees a DeLorean slowly emerging from a shroud of hot steam, it's probably
me.
[That was a joke, BTW. I will only drive my DeLorean if I have installed the
new water pump by then.]

One of the great things about the Ohio show will be finally putting faces with the names (emails). To help identify other DMLer's, I was thinking we should make up some sort of ID's (name tags). They could say "DML" at the top, then have our first name and email address. Personally, I know I MAY recognize some of your names if I saw them on a sticker, but I'd definitely recognize email addresses. Just a thought.

No, this is not a major problem. Based on the tape player survey last
week, about half of the people on the DML have installed an aftermarket
radio anyway.

My guess is that the fuel pump is getting shut off or shorted out. The
inertia switch circuit links the power locks and the fuel pump (by
coincidence, the subject of my thread this week). This should be
relatively easy to solve. Check to see if the inertia switch has been
bypassed. A really quick fix would be to unplug the power locks. (Some
of us actually prefer to lock our DeLoreans manually anyway). If you
invest an hour or two you could probably restore the circuit to normal.

GPS = Global Positioning System. It uses DoD satellites to pinpoint your
location on Earth to within 100 feet. Combine it with mapping software and
you're never lost! Some of the rental-car companies put these things in
high-end cars. You can input your destination and it will determine the
route and read the directions aloud, TELLING YOU WHEN TO TURN. Very cool.
Personally, I want the Alpine in-dash model that looks like a regular radio,
but has the screen pop out:

In the DMC-12, however, this would block the air vents. (sigh)
HUD=Heads-Up Display. It's use in fighter jets, etc., where the dash info
is projected into the windshield. You focus on the foreground to see your
instruments, or the background to see where you're going, but in either case
you got to keep your eyes forward. Probably not a great idea in a car but
it sounds fun. (Maybe if the DMC ever flies...)
Anyway, I'm bringing a notebook PC to Cleveland with a GPS receiver that
plugs into the serial port and has mapping software. But I've never tried
it before, so it should be interesting.

That's a pretty good idea! The ide is to make staying on course as stress-free
as possible. I have not used GPS before, but I have a friend who takes one
everywhere he goes. I can probably talk him into making the run and jotting
down the waypoints. Anyone with suggestions for the format of this please email
me privately. I may have a seperate version of the written directions for
people who use GPS.

I ordered new tires for the rear of my D today from the Tire Rack. I bought
the Yokohamma AVS Intermediate, 235 60 15's V-rated. I know that it is
possible to over-torque the front rims, but what about the rear? Is there
anything that I need to caution my mechanic when re-installing the rear rims?
What is the correct torque settings for the rims? Also, what about the tire
balancing, is there something special for that also? Please let me know...DMC

Group,
I, being a college student and having to combat my expenses, have
decided to try and sell my DeLorean. I am still toying with the notion, but
a good offer might take it home. It is an 1981 5-speed with grey leather and
49,500 miles. The exterior and interior look very good! The hood has a few
small dings, and the passenger seat has checking. The dash is not cracked or
faded, but the billet has cracked and the previous owner has put a vinyl
cover over it and it looks great. Everything works! Windows, locks, mirrors,
ALL electrical, radio and tape player...etc. Has had all updates as far as I
know. The engine runs strong, and drives very well. Since I bought it, I
have put in a new thermostat, wipers, wheel caps, and have a label set and
muffler heatshield (both uninstalled). The fascias are painted black and
look really cool! Tires have plently of tread, and look nice. The car also
has new belts. I drove the car back from Atlanta last week and it did fine.
I am asking $9,900. The car is in Huntsville, AL. and I will have pics to

If you mean those big, funky tips, they only come welded on. You have to get
the whole muffler. Unless somebody has an aftermarket substitute. But there
aren't any loose originals.

Hmmm. Depends where they are. When I was scouting the market for a D, I saw
a few that were really nice, like new looking, except a few dings in the
doors and hood. No problem, right? Well, it seems that some dings are
easier than others. And hood dings can be impossible. Buy a new hood- that's
the fix. Provided you want a flat hood, no flap or grooves. That's one
reason I ended up with a car needing mechanical work, but having a perfect
body. I didn't want to spend an amount equal to buying a new (small) car,
only to be riding around in a dent bucket. And the panels, apart from the
front left, seem to run (ballpark) $1,000. on average. Not to mention
installation. So do your homework, and talk to someone who knows, like Rob
Grady, if the dents bother you like they would bother me!

Hoods are tough. I was given an 1981 hood with a ding about the size of a
baseball. Indeed that is what hit it at the Baltimore Orioles Park at Camden
Yard.
A plumber came and worked out the dent. I video taped what he did. Very labor
intensive and time consuming. No telling there was a dent. But buying a new
hood is in the extreme case of a crease or severe accident damage. IF YOUR
SERIOUS take a photo and send it to a reputable DMC or Stainless steel artist
in the Hemming Motor News.

As of last week (5/5/00) it's about 12 feet. The DoD turned off the
intentional degradation that they were doing and are letting the receivers
work as they were intended to work.

There *ARE* loose muffler tips available from De Lorean Motor Company
(Houston). They have no aprt number assigned, and are still in the
warehouse in Ohio. Since there has been little to no demand for them,
we have not made it a priority to assign them a part number and make

Hello list,
The outside of my DeLorean is starting to come back together. I just
need a rear window and the outside is pretty much done(still needs paint). I
retorqued my torsion bars because the doors had to be removed. I put brand
new pj grady struts on them when it was in the mid 40's(they still went too
fast then too but I was tired and left them). now that it is hot outside
they open to fast and bounce hard at the top(2-3 hard bounces). before I put
a rear window in I want to get the torsion bars taken car of first. It makes
the car look bad when the doors bounce so hard at the top. how many splines
should I move it down? I know it is very touchy so would 1 or 2 notches to
the trick? if anyone has had experience please let me know. I just watched
back to the future to see how those doors should roughly open. In part II
the doors seem to work much better than they do in part I. but my doors go
way faster than thoughs. I know this isnt the best comparison but the
DeLorean owner that comes to my house has bad struts so I dont really know.
I am also looking for a used rear window if anyone has one. I am also
working on a web-page so people can see what my DeLorean has acheived.
