David, Most people would want your trouble with the fans on a lot. But, I
know what you mean. The otterstat is the primary part that would allow the
fans to come on. Remember, They are + /- 5% tol. I have one that is a little
hotter if you want to try it.

If you click on the "New" graphic, it pops up to

http://www.sunstartoys.com/news/news.htm

Which it titled New Products, scroll down to the bottom.  Although they do
not show the actual model, it still lists the DeLorean as a new product.  It
states: "The Car you won't miss it -- 1981 De Lorean Lk Coupe is coming soon
in the near future."  But that was posted on March 23, 2001, so the time
seems correct on Exoticar's release.

The DeLorean is on Sun Star's website.  It's located under the NEWS link at:
http://www.sunstartoys.com/news/news.htm

It was also printed in there 2001 catalog.

I spoke directly with Sun Star a few weeks ago, and the stainless DMC-12 is
scheduled for September, followed by the BACK TO THE FUTURE DMC-12 in
November.  The gold-plated version; tentative Spring 2002.  They've got to
see how well the stainless DMC sells before than can officially decide to
move forward with the gold-plated ones.

I have a problem with my AC also, the passenger carpets keep getting
wet. I tried using a vacuum to suck the drain tube out and although
nothing really came out, water does slowly drip out the tube. My
center console vents are not working could this be the problem?
thanks in advance for your replies.

That was me.... :)

I Agree, this does not look like either the Legend Twin Turbo (Car's 501
and 502) or the single turbo's (528 and 530).. There is also 558 which
was owned by Legend, but I dont know what the purpose of, or
configuration of it was.

I have seen both configurations in person, and a number of aftermarket
kits.  At first glance, this looks like a legend type kit with
intercoolers added.  With this placement of the intercoolers, Id like to
see a fer more photos of the configuration to see if it will work in my
car...  Id also be interested in who REALLY did this conversion to see
if I can contact them.

I have sent mail to the seller on Ebay, with no response.  I assume he
was flooded with questions from other list members.

If someone on the list buys this car, please contact me...  Id like to
get some more photos, and maybe a personal look. :)

Air scoops and intercoolers.  2 steps closer to the Legend, but still
no cigar.  Very interesting though.  I remember about a month or 2 ago
someone asked if anyone had put intercoolers on one of the other turbo
setups.  There you go.  Thanks for the pics Eric.

David,

You say that your fan fail light flickers and the fan relay clicks
frantically sometimes when the fans come on.  It shouldn't do this.  I am
suspicious that you have a bad otterstat.  This gadget is a switch that is
activated by a bi-metal strip.  Two different metal alloys are layered
together.  One alloy is more temperature sensitive that the other, so when
the temperature changes, it tends curl or warp.  This triggers the switch.
It sounds like your problem may be that something inside this switch is
loose.  When working properly, it is supposed to switch off when at several
degrees cooler than when it switched on.  This is supposed to reduce the
chance of rapid cycling.  In your case, it sounds like this mechanism has
gone to the other extreme where the coolant has to be luke warm before the
otterstat will switch off.  When the switch comes on, it may be holding the
contacts closed with only mediocre force which would explain your flickering
light and chattering relay.

I have done this test before:  take the otterstat out and put it in a
shallow pan of water with a thermometer.  Heat it on a stove with a
continuity meter allegator clipped to the otterstat.  You will be able to
see at what temperature it switches on and off.  While you are at it, check
your original otterstat the same way and compare.  Since you seem to be
having such bad luck with otterstats, I suggest checking any new ones the
same way before you put them on the car.

Let us know what you find.

Well, today I received a back order email from Exoticar, it states:

"The item that you ordered is currently on manufacturer backorder at this
time.  We are expecting our next shipment to arrive in approximately 2-4
weeks and your order will be shipped as soon as the item arrives in stock."

So it looks as if the DeLorean is available, but on back order.

Try getting a long, flexible pipe cleaner and using that.  Water is
thicker than air and sometimes a drain that a vacuum goes through fine
will still not let enough water through if you live in a humid climate.

Another test you could do along with testing the otterstat is to
unplug the wires from it and place a jumper wire between them. This
should keep the fans running continuously (with the ignition key in
the run position). If you notice that it's still "chattering" then I
would look else where in the circuit, start from the beginning. You
may have a break in a wire or a loose connection.

Is this stuff any less oily that Hi-Lite? I hate using that - it
leaves a residue (it is mostly mineral oil and water) that just
attracts dust like a magnet. My favorite is still windex....

Another hint - Turtle Wax Clear-Guard (silicone) is great at car
shows - make the car shiny and fingerprints disappear. The drawback
is that it looks horrible if it gets wet, so it's no good for
everyday use. I remove it (with Windex!) after the show.

I have seen a lot of good things mentioned about the DeLorean Gold Portfolio
book in the DML archives.  There are a couple of other things that I would
like to know:

Is this book still available new from any established book retailer?

How many editions of this book were printed?  I get the impression that
later copies were printed as new material to include became available.  Is
this true or is it just a wrong assumption on my part?

What is (was) the suggested retail price of this book, and what is a used
copy worth now?

Subject: door handle installation

I am getting ready to replace the driver's side door handle on my car with
the latest reproduction made by DMC Houston.  I already replaced the
passenger side door handle a few weeks ago with the same, and with that
experience behind me, I now want to know if anyone has any tips on how to
make the job easier.

In particular, how do you get any kind of wrench/socket to fit the nuts in
the door?  There isn't enough room to swing a crescent wrench.  There isn't
a straight enough shot to use a socket with an extension.  In fact, there
isn't even enough room for a socket at all.  My shallowest 10mm socket was
too long to clear obstructions in the door.

The only wrench configuration that I could make work was a crowfoot wrench
on the end of a swivel socket adapter with a long extension & ratchet
handle.  And I still only had enough room to tighten the nuts 1/4 turn at a
time when I was lucky enough to flop the swivel extension in the right spot.
It was like playing pin-ball only not as fun.  Surely there must be a better
way!

Removing the old handle assembly was quite complicated because it had
attached an older reproduction cast aluminum handle that was held to the
base assembly with pivot pins that were so long that the handle could not be
removed without first being disassembled inside the door.  What a job!  It
must have taken someone with very tiny hands and a lot of patience to put
that thing together inside the door the last time.  I read in the DML
archives that someone cut the stainless door skin holes a little bigger to
fit a pre-assembled handle rather than try to assemble it from inside the
door.

Thankfully, the new reproduction DMC Houston handle goes on just like the
OEM with no fuss -- except getting the 10mm nuts on and off in that small
space.

While I had it apart, I filled the cable/sheath with white lithium grease
since it was completely dry and full of corrosion from water intrusion.

Comments anyone?

Subject: AC compressor oddity

Hi,

I have a very small, yet annoying problem with my AC compressor. First
off, everything works, I recently bought the car (#16187) and it had
been sitting still for approx. 8 years. But pressure testing the AC
went well, and after filing it it worked.

However, every time the AC compressor 'kicks in', which is every
couple of seconds, I hear a grinding/buzzing sound that resonates
through the entire car, and my perception is that when I drive 25MPH
the car slows down a bit (fractionally) when this happens. Almost as
if the AC compressor slows the engine (by 'braking' the engine through
the belt). The AC belt also 'wiggles' more when the AC compressor is
active, which tells me that there is some (if not a lot) of resistance
on that belt when the compressor is active. I already tried to tighten
the belt to no avail. I'll try to tighten it again one of these days,
but something tells me that there is something else wrong.

The wheels that guide the belt seem to turn OK, and I lubricated the
guide-wheels and the moving parts of the compressor with WD40, but
that doesn't help.

What's more, the resonating sound seems to come from the front of the
car, and when I put my ear over the opened engine cover the sound
doesn't seem to come from the compressor.

I have absolutely no idea where to look, so if someone (from this
fuzzy description) can point my in any direction I'll be much obliged.

Thanks,

Sacha

Subject: Car always in neutral?!?!

Hello again,

My car decided to be a little bit...angry with me today.  I wonder if this has happened to anyone else on the list.  My car is vin 1217, early '81 with the automatic transmission.  I had been driving today for about five minutes when I pushed the pedal down a little farther to accelerate up a hill.  Instead of doing the normal thing a car does when you push on the gas (go faster), it revved REALLY high like it was in neutral.  I revved it some more to make sure it wasn't a fluke, but all it did was go high into the RPMs.  It behaved exactly like it was in neutral.  Fortunately, I was able to pull into a park&ride and into a parking space.  I tried the gas with the gear lever in reverse, neutral, drive, 2, and 1.  Each one behaved exactly like neutral.  I put it into park and the car acted like it was in park: The car didn't roll or anything.  I turned the car off and back on again and it started perfectly.  Same symptoms as before.  I don't really know what to do, so in a few minutes I'm going to get it towed (flatbed, of course) to my local DeLorean mechanic, Brad Bean at FAME Automotive.  Does anyone know what's wrong?  I think it might be the stupid auto transmission governor/computer thing, but I have no idea.  Any ideas?  Help!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

mail order magazine that specialized in automotive books. The back page has a
phone number you could call and find out if you can still get it.

Subject: Turbo DeLorean

This website:
http://www.1981delorean.homestead.com
Claims that this DeLorean can go 0-60 in 3 seconds, due to the turbocharger.
It also says the DeLorean was "1 in 5" that were turbocharged. I haven't
heard of this car, or the "4 others." I do know about the Legend Industries
ones.

Is this just a mistake?
I am almost positive it is.

Walt, have you tried a ratcheting boxed end wrench? Those things come in
handy on  just about everything.
