It has been my experience that most of the mechanics that do GOOD work on
the D's (aside from the big 3) tend to be slightly out-of-the-way shops and
not any general specialists. My mechanic in North Carolina was out in the
middle of nowhere, and his shop was a homage to all things old and broken. .
.but he did fast, reliable and inexpensive work on my car. . .
The point? Avoid the foreign specialists, auto dealerships, and "common"
places. You are likely to find someone eventually that is competent with
DeLoreans and won't try to rip you off. . .

The car I am refering to was (and may still be) in Roseville Mi. It was
owned by a man named Ron who owns Ron's Pawnshop. His house, yard and
garage is almost directly in back of the shop. This is where the D sat.
She did not look like a prototype (at least as far as I could tell from
as close as I could get). But I did see that the windows were perpetualy
open, so the interior has to be (or have been) trashed (not to mention
the sun). I stopped seeing her there about 2 years ago.

I've seen numerous posts and discussions in the past year about the
vibration that is common on the DeLorean at around 60-70mph. This is also a
problem on other sports cars, and on one of the other lists that I monitor,
I saw this web address:
This is a site that Hunter Engineering put up for their high end balancing
machine. Not only does it check tire balance, but it can check tire and rim
lateral and radial runout, tire uniformity (hard places in the sidewall
that don't flex like the rest of the tire), and improper bead seating. In
other words, most of the problems that can cause vibrations. The person who
posted the link on the other list swore that it solved his vibration
problem completely.
There is a locator to find a shop near you that has one of these. I'm going
to try it in a few weeks when my budget gets better and will post the
results. If anyone tries it before that, please post and let us know!

Don't make fun unless you are really informed. The fact is that the drilled
rotors are
a direct result of the video industry's need to see some kind of rotational
movement
when doing close up's of tire changes in the pits at races. With out the
little rotating holes
the cameras only see an un-moving shiny disk. This critical part of every
race would
be lost if the rotors were solid as they are in street cars of low grade
and quality.

Haven't gotten the magazine yet, but if the title was given as "Dream Maker. The
Rise and Fall of John Z. DeLorean", it is the British version of the same book.
The two are the same except for words like earth vs. ground, tyre vs. tire,
etc. I have both books.

CAUTION: Be sure to use all standard automotive jacking and support
procedures when raising and supporting the vehicle for service.
There are two different jack support points that will provide safe support.
The jacking support plates located at either end of the rocker panels
(indicated on the jack storage compartment cover) or the frame member
adjacent to the frame tie down hooks will provide for safe support for the
DeLorean.

I'm not expert, but the inertia switch IS connected to the door locks. It
unlocks them if the car rolls over. There is a relay that controls the
locks. It's the big squarish black box in the electrical compartment.
That's the one you replace with the Lockzilla, from PJ Grady, which I
recently installed in mine. There are also self resetting circuit breakers.
You need more help than I can offer. Call Rob at Grady. (1-631-589-6224 If
you get an answer machine, don't worry, they're very good about calling
back.) He'll be glad to help you out, whether you buy Lockzilla or not. A
great, easy to install product, by the way

If the disconnected inertia switch wire is inadvertently grounded, the locks
will not work (they may lock but not unlock). Also, the "LOCK DOORS" socket
in the dash will defeat the locks if grounded; this happened to me.
The original door lock module was plagued with problems and may have failed.
You will probably want to replace it with a LockZilla regardless, since the
traditional advice to those with older lock modules is to disconnect them
before the solenoids fry. There IS a circuit breaker for the lock module
but it failed to trip even when the solenoids were clamped to tight it
prevented the doors from being opened.
You may also have a problem with the locking rods in the doors being
misaligned. If you want to check the function of the doors, I can give you
the wiring colors from the connector to the lock module that I used when I
was troubleshooting:
Red/Pink (2) : Door solenoid, Lock Door (apply 12V)
Red/Gray (2) : Door solenoid, Unlock Door (apply 12V)
Brown/Gray : Position switch from door; OPEN when both locks forward
(unlocked), otherwise grounded
Brown/Pink : Position switch as above except OPEN when doors locked
NOTE: These wires are joined together and connect BOTH doors. Also, the
door locks will not operate properly with the doors open. I used a
screwdriver to close the latches to be able to work the locks with the doors
open, but got quite startled when I tried to close the door. :-) By the
way, I might have the Red/Pink and Red/Gray wires reversed, my notes were a
bit vague. I knew what I was talking about at the time, oh well.

In most cases, "sports cars" are no more expensive to insure than regular
cars. Some idiots will even tell you "If your car is red it will be more
expensive to insure." The bottom line is that I've had over 20 cars and
whether I have a Cavalier, a Cadillac limo or a Delorean, the basic
liability is the same price. If they tell you otherwise, go to a local
insurance and shop around. What will kill you in price is any kind of comp
or collision coverage, which most companies will not offer for the car
anyway.

Aside from Delorean One, are there any parts outlets and repair shops that
any of you can recommend in the Los Angeles area -- especially West Los
