Chris,

That car belongs to a DMLer.  I believe his name is Joseph Molino.  And
believe it or not, last I heard that car is in great shape and on the road
thanks to the dedicated work of PJ Gradys.  I am sure he might send a post to
the DML if he follows the link to the web page posted.

Subject: Alignment problems?

Hi,
I finally had my car aligned today as it has not had one since I got it.
They did not have the specs for the DeLorean in their computer but did the
best they could.  They said they didn't want to align the rear wheels because
they were not sure they had the correct shims or procedure.
Here are the stats they printed off for me.  I don't really know what they
mean at all.  He said the rear wheels are out of alignment but not enough to
hurt anything.  Can someone verify this? Memphis will be 1,500+ miles on my
car and I don't want to wear out my new yoko's.

CASTER-FRONT
BEFORE-Left 5.2 degrees, AFTER 4.4 degrees
BEFORE-right 5.0 degrees. AFTER 4.3 degrees

CAMBER-FRONT
Left ,0.3 AFTER 0.3
right,-0.05  AFTER -0.05
TOE:FRONT
RIGHT, -0.15,  AFTER 0.00
LEFT-0.25 degrees  AFTER  0.00

REAR-CAMBER
CAMBER=left, -1.6    NOT CHANGED
CAMBER=right, -1.4  NOT CHANGED
TOE-left, -0.60 degrees  NOT CHANGED
TOE-right. 0.35  NOT CHANGED

Are those stats OK?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Car was for sale on eBay a while back. Owner slid on ice, and hit
a pole. I remember this one because of the topic of spare tires
that came up because of it. Someone called the spare a "wagon
wheel". Check the archives with those key words, and you
should find it.

Very interesting site though, thanks for the link. Auto related links
like this one always facinating.

Hello Group-

I thought I would send out directions to the Sleep Inn here in Knoxville for those of you staying here for the pit stop on the way to Memphis.

Sleep Inn is off I-40/75.

Eastbound - take exit 378. Left on Cedar Bluff and then a right on Executive Park Drive. Pass Holiday Inn Select and 0.4 miles past Hampton Inn on same road.

Westbound - take exit 378B, Cedar Bluff South, and go right on Executive Park Drive and go 0.4 miles.

Contact number for the hotel is 865-531-5900 if any one else is interested in staying at the Sleep Inn and joining us for the caravan into Memphis early Thursday morning.  When you call to make the reservations, please tell them you are with the East Tennessee DeLorean Owners Club to get a group discounted rate.

Several people have mentioned caravaning back home through Knoxville, staying at the Sleep Inn on Sunday night, and each going on their way early Monday morning.  If you wish to make a reservation for Sunday night, do so at the same time and the same group rate has been extended to anyone that wants to take advantage of it.

If anyone has any questions, or would like any more information on this area, please don't hesitate to ask.  Some of us are planning on going out Wednesday night...so if you make it in on time, you will be welcome to join us.

Regards,

Aaron Posey

btw...perhaps I can show off my dealer sign ;)

Never-Seize on the studs and nuts, just in case you EVER want to take

Hello folks,

I had some reverse indiglo EL gauge faces made for my Supra awhile
back. They look great and I was thinking the D could really benefit
from these. (Many firms sell indiglo but reverse indiglo looks so
much nicer.)

The company I used is: http://www.speedhut.com/

Take a look and see what you think.

It takes 20 orders for them to tool up for a car they don't already
stock. The faces don't have to be any of the wild custom stuff they
offer, just something tasteful and functional. Anybody interested in
coming to an agreement on a design and pursuing this?

Nope, my car still clunks.  I haven't found the problem.  I know that my
battery is loose because a previous liquid acid battery leaked and rotted
the strap apart.  But the clunks that I hear sound more like they are
echoing through the frame.  I know my TABs are fine (although they are
pre-Toby technology).  The next thing to check are my body bolts, but I
haven't had the time to get that deep into it.

you are right.  I bought the car that way for a steal on ebay in Maryland.
Pj Grady did some work.  I did alot of work and my body shop did some
fiberglass work.  It was a cool process.  It looks excellent.  I just took
some pictures at the Delorean Spring social in New Jersey.  As soon as I get
them developed, I will post them.

I think I'd ask how they adjusted the caster and camber as there are no
provisions for adjusting that on a stock DeLorean. The only adjustment is
toe-in.

   From: Peter Lucas <lucas@xxxxxxxx>
Subject: Re: Re: Clunk (not TAB or axles)

I, too, have been plagued with rear-end clunks since the day I
test-drove #6703. It is by far the most annoying problem on my
vehicle--it really detracts from an otherwise amazingly pleasant driving
experience. I have read every word ever posted on this topic and spoken
to many people and followed all the standard advice without success. I
do not believe that *anybody* really understands what is going on. Rob
Grady told me that he once solved a clunking rear-end by replacing the
rear bearings, but that the problem came back in a year.

Part of the problem no doubt stems from the fact that there are multiple
causes, so everybody's advice has a kernel of truth. For the record,
here is an annotated list of all the theories that I am aware of:

1)      Objects sliding around in trunk (or the jack storage space in front
of the trunk).
Comment: This is real. Don't underestimate it. It is often
surprisingly difficult to localize sounds in a car--even front/rear can
be confusing.  Hint: Stick some industrial-sized velcro on the bottom of
your tool box and it will grip the carpet of the trunk and stop sliding
around.

2)      Battery not secure.
Comment: Maybe, but I'm not convinced that it is all that easy to
tip or slide the heavy battery around.  Can anybody report first-hand
that this was the source of their clunk? In any event, tying down your
battery is good hygiene, so why risk it?

3)      TAB problems.
Comment: Almost certainly a real cause of rear-end noise. There
have been first-hand reports to that effect. Not clear to me that it
could easily account for the characteristic "left turn/right turn"
alternation that many of us experience.  I am about to install Toby
Tabs, so we'll see...

4)      Loose body bolts.
Comment: There are also first-hand reports of tightening body bolts
curing clunks. Didn't help in my case, although I have not done the
hard-to-get-at right-rear bolt. If all else fails, I will try that, but
I am pretty sure I hear clunks on both sides and the everything on the
left is definitely tight.

5)      C/V Joint problems.
Comment: It is often suggested that bad or poorly lubricated C/V
joints cause the drive shafts to hang up on turns. It is true that if
you slide the shafts back and forth by hand you can make a sound that
kind of resembles the accursed clunk, but I am skeptical. I have not
seen first-hand reports that C/V work has actually cured the problem (I
filter out "well, seemed to help some" comments as wishful thinking). In
any event, inspecting and repacking the C/V joints didn't help in my
case.

6)      Bad rear bearings or rear hub problems.
Comment: I have encountered few hard facts on this alternative,
beyond the aforementioned discussion with Rob. I consider this a likely
cause, just because I can't think of anything else. There was a vague
article circulating a few years ago involving spraying WD40 into this
area, but I could never make it work. Can anyone elaborate on this
theory? If my new TABs don't help (and I don't think they will), new
bearings will be my last resort.

Anybody who has anything to add to this list, please do so. This is
clearly a widespread problem, and annoying as hell.  It would be great
to finally nail it.

My annual beach trip is coming up and I'd like to read a Delorean book or two. Any recommendations?

On a second topic, I recently replaced my noisy AC/Heater fan motor with one from Special T Auto. It was easy to install and cheap ($30 or so). Problem solved.

Hi
Here's the alligment info I have for the DeLorean.
FRONT - spec. - tol.  (degrees)
left camber -0.25  0.25
right camber -0.25  0.25
left caster 3.75  0.25
right caster 3.75  0.25
total toe 0.48  0.08

REAR
camber -0.50  0.25
total toe 0.48  0.08

Your front alligment is 0.00 on both sides while it should be 0.20 to 0.24
on each side. It means that you will be wearing out the outside portion of
your front tires. Rear is off as well and since it's different on each side
you might get some pulling to one side especially on uneven roads. Actually
the rear might drift to the right. I would get the alligment done one more
time on ALL four wheels before going to Memphis - it's a looong drive. FYI
only TOE is adjustable on DeLorean.

Hope this helps

You loosen the same adjustment nut as you do for raising/lowering the
steering column.  While it is loose, you can also pull it forward or
backwards.

I learned about that the first day I owned my car.  I had to travel across
the state to pick it up and spend the night in a hotel, so that night I read
the owner's manual cover-to-cover.

Clunking noises emanating from the rear of the car during slight body
twisting are usually generated between the fiberglass body and chassis.
Tightening up the body to chassis bolts will usually eliminate this noise.

Rich:

A friend of a friend who bought a DeLorean back in 1981 was my height -- five and a half feet tall -- and he didn't have a problem with the car. (Other than when he got locked in it, at which point he brought the car back to the dealer and got them to take it back. I bet he kicked himself later.)

Anyway, I'm sure that just because JZD is over six feet tall that doesn't mean you're going to have the "looking through the steering wheel" problem.

And since you're in the market for an SUV, please make sure you both can see over the dash. Please. [Holds back comment about blonde in purple Jeep who nearly crushed him this morning and two accidents involving short blondes.]

Seriously, though, Rich, no matter what height you are, the De is worth owning. If it turns out you need a higher seat, you can always raise it. :)

Just my $0.02 --

Subject: Addition to DeLorean Car Show

since many of you enjoy driving I have worked out a deal with the following people in Memphis to allow you to drive a Nascar race car a a special price.  The same package at Richard Petty in Florida is about 4 times the cost so I think its a pretty good deal and it can be done while you are in Memphis.

This is the e-mail promption they made for us.
More details will be at the show plus you can look up their web page.  If you have never driven a NASCAR before you will enjoy this one.

I believe that a pass to do one of their driving experiences will be raffled off Friday (still working on that one)

My clunk turned out to be a weak rear spring. It had been cut to lower
the car, (yes, the rear) and my guess is that the heat of the cutting
tool weakened the springyness of the coil. When under load, the coil
had a definite bend in it, and the coils on one end of the spring
length were more tightly spaced than at the other end. The car clunked
when going over a sharp bump, or when turning sharply. It also listed
to one side by about 1/2 inch, when viewed from the rear.

I replaced both rear springs and shocks with PJ's, and my clunk went away.

Subject: Re: Alignment problems?

This is great information for everybody's benefit.  The neutral
position of the front wheels (no toe in) will make the car somewhat
"twitchy" and directionally unstable.  The condition can also cause
resonant wheel shimmy at certain speeds.  The positive toe-in is
important for these purposes, among many.  (As an aside, all modern
jet aircraft have the engines toed in approximately two degrees for
the same reasons).  The front caster *can* be adjusted by appropriate
placement of shims in the joint between the front sway bar and the
lower control arm, although this is not mentioned in the manuals.  A
caster difference between the two front wheels will have a negative
effect on steering stability as well.  As noted, camber is not
adjustable unless you have custom suspension links that are made to be
adjustable.  The reported alignment should definitely be redone.  And,
(IMHO), the only place to have a good alignment done is at a frame and
alignment shop rather than a tire store.  While there might be good
tire stores around, they do not usually specialize in "frame issues".
Just a thought.

try advertising to split a room
If you want the best of the show do Friday drive tour
Saurday car show (both free) the Friday night event may not be cheap but it is the big show so don't miss it $47.00
that should do it.

Saturday is more awards and Thursday is a big get together althought the $25 cost is reasonable for what you are gonna pig out on

Subject: Re: Clunk (not TAB or axles)

Peter - I commend you for this fantastic post.  Nothing quite like
gathering it all together for a better perspective.  I was looking at
photos of the rear suspension, and my eyes are drawn to the
steel/rubber bushings that are pressed into each end of the
upper and lower lateral links (De Dion links?).  Has anybody with the
dreaded clunk taken the time to remove the large bolts and carefully
examine the condition of the bushings, and make sure that the bolts
are straight and tight?  If there was some play in the bushings from
delaminated rubber or worn sleeves, or worn and/or loose bolts, the
play could result in movement in the joint under cornering loads.  I
know that I have had "issues" with other bushings that were very worn
and damaged, resulting in some interesting behavior.  The bushings
normally pressed into the shock absorber ends could also create some
movement under load.  I think that it might be worth a look.  My car
doesn't clunk at all, so it's not a good candidate for this
inspection.
