Welcome to the world of Quentin "slap-head" Willson. He's the single
largest source of misinformation on the DeLorean in the whole world. For
some reason, he has a chip on his shoulder about the car. The largest
bug-bear was the UK TV show The Car's The Star, in which not ONE good
word was given on the car, and a hell of a lot of half-truths and
downright un-truths were given. Subsequently I've seen TCTS on the
Edsel, and Quents was very complimentary of its "collectableness" today.
I spend an inordinate amount of time at shows correcting people's
"knowledge" of the D, all down to people watching or reading Quentin.

If I ever meet him, I'll hardly be able to resist thumping him.

There's a LOT more about him on my website here:

http://www.delorean.co.uk/other.html

(see "Mirror Article" and "The Car's the Star")

Interestingly, on other car shows, even Quentin's "colleagues" from
BBC's Top Gear (Jeremy Clarkson, Tiff Needell) have given the DeLorean
an approving nod.

The suction hose is in the fuel tank.

The school is the DML archives.  While they may not be 100% accurate, it tends to correct itself over time so make sure you read more than just one message on a given topic.

Personally I  intend investing in Houston's DIN bracket, and buying a
Kenwood CD/MP3 head unit. See here

https://secure.caraudiodirect.com/shop/acatalog/C_A_D_Catalogue_MP3_Players_17.html

Being a computer-buff, this means I can write 10cd's worth of music to
one CDR worth 50p (dunno about everyone else, but CDs that go in my car
end up scratched beyond playable most of the time.). It means not having
to keep swapping my favourite CDs from my Xantia (every-day car), and
not worrying about where to put the CD changer.

Just a thought.

Thanks for all the info (from everyone).  The purpose of my question was to try and collect information on this gearbox to either locate or build a custom bell housing for a conversion.  I have spoken to a number of people who have already done other DMC conversions, and it does not seem like the information I need is within the DeLorean community..... SO I wanted to look elsewhere. :)

I guess a better question would be, what other cars use the same transmission bell housing design as the DeLorean.

You asked:

The manual transmission used in the DeLorean is a Renault 395. Although the
inner workings of the transmission is used in several Renault models like
the 30 and A310 the DeLorean version is exclusive to the DeLorean.

I just want to add my two cents here.  I am not a professional car audio
nut, but I have installed a few CD changers in all of my cars, and have used
this method for all of them.  For the Delorean,  I mounted the CD changer on
top of the plywood electrical panel on the deck behind the drivers seat.  I
simply used two "eye"-bolts, one on each side of the changer screwed into
the edges of plywood panel (but not the deck carpet), and used a rubber
strap with hooks to secure the CD changer to the eye-bolts.  The location is
great since power is easy (two feet to the fuses), and the antenna junction
box for the FM modulator/injector is the service area right below the panel.
What's nice about this is that I can very easily remove the CD changer for
shows and events, and even remove the bolts and all the wiring in a matter
of minutes, and the only evidence of the install is two small holes in the
plywood panel (covered by the carpet).   Yes, the downside is that it is
easy for someone else to easily remove without permission, but I am not
worried about that. I'd rather have it easy to remove, than have a glovebox,
dashboard, or other parts of the car destroyed in a hurry if someone wants
it that bad.

Before you condemn your angle drive remove the front left wheel and
carefully inspect the plastic dust cover that gets captured between
the wheel and the hub. If the square hole in the center is worn or the
disc isn't held tightly between the wheel and hub it will cause the
speeedo to be erratic. Make sure the square drive cable fully engages
into the plastic disc i.e. it isn't short or rounded off. If this
doesn't help you may need the angle drive or the lower drive cable
could be bad. Lubricate the angle drive and the loweer cable, it may
get things going again. The plastic "dust cover" is really a
speedometer drive disc as it connects the speedo cable to the hub and
wheel assembly.

Your comments about D with over 200K miles is exactly what scared Detroit into getting
rid of him.

He orginally was going to warranty the cars for 25 years!!! Imagine only have to buy 3
cars in your lifetime verses  the 10  cars that Detroit plans for.

DeLorean built a car that planned to use components that lasted that long.
Unfortunately, his suppliers were not always up to the task.  One would hate to think
that some suppliers purposely supplied him with defective parts.  However, with all of
the conflicts of interest that money can create one will always wonder.

Subject: Re: fuel pressure tester

The suction hose that I am referring to is the hose that connects the
fuel pump to the baffle in the bottom of the fuel tank. It is very
easy to kink when installing the fuel pump if it is turned as you
reassemble. It also can get soft and mushy with age and under high
flow it can collapse under vacuum. During testing this may occur.
Getting back to your hard hot start it typically is a bad fuel
accumulater or a bad or missing check valve on the fuel pump. The test
to check this by switching 2 plugs will not help you determine if it
is either the accumulater of check valve as you need both parts
operating corrrectly to hold up the rest pressure. To test for the
check valve just clamp off the return line to the fuel tank and either
watch the pressure or just try to restart hot. To check the
acccumulater remove the return line and clamp off. Start the fuel pump
and if fuel comes out the return of the accumulater the diaphgram is
ruptured. If you do find yourself replacing the fuel filter or the
accumulater BE CAREFUL WITH THE FUEL LINES. Kinking or bending them
may require raising the body to replace them!

My bet is that you have a loose angle drive cap.  Take your wheel off and
see how tight the cap fits.  If you can spin it in place then that is your
problem.  Mine had the same problem.  To fix it I just put a layer of duct
tape around the edges so that it fits tighter in the hub.  A more elegant
way would be to replace the cap, but I know that a NOS one will eventually
fail the same way.  So I consider the duct tape to be a permanent fix. If
you get a new cap then save your old one to put on the passenger side wheel.
It will keep the inside a lot cleaner.

The last time I had a similar symptom I had a siezed U joint in the
steering column. To precisely diagnose the problem you may need to
disconnect the U joint from the steering column spline in the area of
the wheel well near the firewall. Once the steering column is
disconnected you can tell if your U joints are OK (and if they are
not you have half of the work done in replacing).

The tight-loose tendency on my car stemmed from the U joint being
siezed and the steering column being nearly a straight shot. Since
the column was pretty much a straight shot it was difficult to tell
that the U joint was siezed since it's displacement during rotation
was slight. With it being siezed and having a slight bend, the
geometry was such that when I turned the wheel it put stresses on the
linkage (as well as puts pressure on the grommet through the
firewall) resulting in the tight-loose feel when turning.

The turbo's used in the "Island" twin turbo kit are
from IHI.  They are, I believe, from the RHB family of
IHI turbo's.  Does anyone (Marc?) no which RHB turbo

Reason for asking:  IHI has now produced The RHF
series as a "bolt-on" replacement for the RHB series.
The new RHF's are ball bearing turbos and use much
more modern technology in vane design, etc.  At some
point when needing to rebuild your turbo's, replacemtn
with the new series might be a very desirable
alternative (although I realize that this would be
more expensive).

You said:
".......my speedo needle started bobbing back and forth then lower and

Start by removing the right front wheel and check the plastic cap (workshop
man. J:03:01 fig. 8) at the center of the wheel. Insure that the angle drive
cable (parts man. 5/1/1 #13) coming through the spindle is tightly seated in
the cap. Be sure that the cap is tightly seated in the wheel.

Keep in mind that this problem may indicate an eventual complete failure of
the angle drive which would render the speedometer in-operable.

I put two pictures into the photos section on yahoogroups.
You can find them in the Techie Stuff folder.

These pictures were taken after replacing my angledrive last may;
the cable running through the axle had snapped in the middle,
making replacement my only option.

While replacing the AD I also inslattel the new support bracket,
since the old one had snapped off and added a wheather proofing kit
to keep water and dirt out of the new (OEM) drive.

I went with an OEM-unit since I had no core to send to PJ Grady
AND I neede the drive fast; else I wouldn't have passed inspection.
If I had had more time I'd have installed a hardCore-version from Grady.

Hope the pictures help,

Hi All,
I am new to this group, but i am an avid(rabid??) Delorean fan. I
purchased an 81 #2801 in August 2001. After some work at PJ Gradys,
shes now a daily driver and a great compliment to my SLK 320. I have
some questions regarding modifications. I love the way the car looks,
but i saw a pic of one in Black that looks wild. I am thinking of
painting, and updating the car to turn it into the car we all know it
would have become. New and better stereo (satellite radio?), CD
changer, performance suspension, headers/exhaust system, intake
mods, upgraded cooling system, rims and tires (15's in front 16's in
back, also a 3rd brake light. I also want to get the side marker
lights to blink when turning, as it would be much safer than it is at
present. The car is practically mint with only 20,000 original miles
on her. the interior is almost perfect and the body has no dings or
dents. It is an automatic, but has an upgraded computer and works
great. Let me know what all of you think, as i would like to hear
your thoughts as well as get to know everyone. I look forward to
hearing from you.

[Moderator note: Didn't we have an air box discussion just a couple of months ago?]

Group,

I have noticed that no true performace air filter setup is offered for
the DeLorean. I have seen K&N air filters for sale, but they use the same
standard airbox and, from my experience, K&N is not a true performance
filter. I am talking about a filter that will provide incredible air flow,
proper filtration, and will be sturdy and easy to maintain. I am currently
talking with companies about putting this together, and I was curious how
many of you would be interested in purchasing them if I can get this project
off the ground.

On another note, I am trying to form a group of DeLorean owners
interested in aftermarket and performace parts tailored for the DeLorean.
Aside from the before mentioned air filter, I have been looking into short
shift kits, dash upgrades, exhaust, and other modifications. This group,
consisting of me and a few others is called "The DeLorean Performace Group".
If anyone has any ideas or would like to share thoughts please contact me.
Also, please contact me if you would be interested in purchasing one of the
filters after they are built. I am not sure on pricing yet, but I would
guestimate price to be around $100.00 - $150.00 all together.

Thanks a lot and I look forward to your input!

Anyone with a bit of time out there?  I would greatly appreciate your
looking over the list below and advising on any or all subjects.  I
am an utter newbie, but a good mechanic.  In some cases I don't even
know what questions to ask...

If you prefer not ro reply to the list, please reply directly to
stevepeck1@xxxxxxxxxx  Thanks so very much for your review of this...

Under hood/front:
Carpet starting to droop in two sections ( what is a good choice for
contact cement?)
Tool bag has two empty pockets.  There is a jack, ratchet wrench and
spark plug tool, all rusty.
Original gas cap is changed.  The car uses the non-locking model,
since there is no hood flap.
The horn is weak sounding.  Can these be repaired with a little
tinkering?
How can I tell if the recalls have been done?
Ball joint boots are gone.  Should I replace the joints if they show
no looseness, or is there a re-boot available?
The hood does not have any real pop-up action when the release is
pulled.  What am I missing here?

Brakes:
Brake rotors need to be turned, or alternatively, is there an
inexpensive aftermarket rotor available?
In the first MILE that I owned the car, the rear brake cylinder
froze.  I pried it back open, but it could use some attention.  Is
there a recommended procedure?  Are special tools required?
The parking brake works, but if the rubber handle cover is used, the
brake handle will not fully settle to the bottom of travel.  What am
I missing here?  Is there an adjustment procedure?

Exterior, general:
The right front corner antenna mast is a bit kinked.  I could buy a
basic replacement, but is there an exact replacement?
Window black rubber seals and "wipe strips…" Who has the best prices
for replacements?  The Previous Owner has smeared them with rubber
sealant…
What type of adhesive sealant holds in the rear quarter windows?  Is
this a tough job?

Electrical:
The right hand turn signal occasionally goes double-speed, which
indicates to me that a bulb is intermittent, or it has a bad ground.
Any experience with this?
What is the proper battery size?
The fuse box has been replaced, I assume because of the original's
propensity to melt.
Who has a diagram of the '81 relays?  The PO "rigged" the ones on
this car.
How can I tell if the relays have been upgraded?  A relay on the far
right of the car above the battery has been jumpered.  Fuel pump?
Can the rheostat for the dash lights be rebuilt/repaired?
The Cig lighter and clock don't work.  I assume that they are on the
same circuit.
How can I get my hands on an electrical diagram.
The right-side mirror has no up/down adjustment.  Any likely culprit
or testing procedure?
Headlights (damp inside)
Defogger switch is trashed.

Doors:
Gas struts are pretty well hosed.  Who has the best-priced
replacements?
My window registers (lifts) are toast.  The motors are good.  Who
sells replacement gearing?  I can't pay $300 per side for new motors…

Interior:
I need a shift boot, as it is cut from engaging reverse.
Is there a good way to re-bend slightly warped fiberboard interior
panels?  The tops of the doors are a bit warped, and the rear panel
has bent down quite a bit.  Can they be moistened, re-bent and dried
to restore them??
Are the interior door panel retaining barbs and clips universal-fit?
The headlight switch takes a few presses to convince it to stay
engaged.  Can this me repaired, or should I just shut up and pay the
$48 for the switch?  Who else has those switches for less?
Need the elastic cord replaced for the cargo net.
The dash "pod" is showing some age, but might be re-coatable,
somehow.  Also, the dash has a crack on the right, through the
speaker, and the glove box door has a chip in the corner.  Who does
that kind of stuff?
The trim strip around the pod needs replacement or proper
reattachment.  It's drooping.
This is a weird one:  I need two of the little press-in brass inserts
that go into the ignition switch cover at the base of the steering
wheel.  Two are in there, and two are gone…
The ignition switch and door key are different.  The door key is the
big-head, shorter lighted key, and the ignition is smaller-headed,
but longer.  Can either the door or ignition locks be disassembled
and re-worked to operate the car with one key?
Who sells the original key blanks?  Anybody?
Needs new visors
I need all the door seals and gaskets.  Is the profile of any of
these available at JC Whitney or another (<$300/side) source?
Is there a steering wheel recovering kit available?
The left turn signal does not return after turning.  Is there a fix
for this?
The interior vinyl strips under the door seal are a bit stretched out.
Please tell me about interior rear view mirror replacement options.
This one is in bad shape.

Under dash / dash:
A whitish box at the base of the column appears to house the lambda-
counter.  The electrical has been bypassed, I assume from someone's
having kicked it loose.  Is this a big deal?
There is a buzzer panel up in there that appears un-secured.  How is
this secured?
The column base "gudgeon" is loose against the firewall.  I have seen
these somewhere in an improved model…  Is this a difficult fix?

Engine bay:
The car may have once been bumped dead center in the rear, as the
engine cover hatch takes some oomph to close, and the latch/release
has been removed.  Also, there is an obvious void of an inch behind
the bumper skin.  Is the bumper skin easy to remove so that the steel
portion may be pulled back out?
The timing cover seals leak like pigs.  How tough is this job?
Needs a crankcase vent hose
Need most new labels
Needs a cover for the relays and plugs inside the engine
compartment.  Who keeps this part?

HVAC:
Is there anything to worry about with an R134a conversion?
The center AC selector pops out if not held in to turn.  Seems
slightly stiff.  Can the works be lubricated?
Where is the filter/dryer/sight glass?

I am very glad YOU got to the bottom of this page.  Thanks for your
thoughts and time.

Thanks to Mark Hershey for all his help so far. I just have a few more
questions about the governor.

There is some type of retaining clip? That slides in above the boards, is
this clip necessary? It doesnt look like it helps at all. I have included a
pic of it so you know what I am talking about.

Also, the metal sheild that covers the circuit box was sealed on with some
type of sealant. Do you know what it is, or a useable substitute? It looks
like common caulk to me, some type of silicon gel I guess.

Thanks,

Adam

Your comments about the DeLorean in the book illustrate the ignorance of the public about
what really happened to the DeLorean.

As you may know, the most common question people ask about  DeLorean is "Is he out of jail
yet?"

That fact that the public has this impression is a fault of the media not telling the truth
or at least both side of a story.
It is also a problem that the media does not put a much time into closure on a story as they
do in headline grabbing.

Even though the United States claims they have a free press, this does not mean that that
press wants to or even tries to print fair and equivalent stories.

As any reporter will tell you  "We are in the business to sell newspapers (TV viewers,
etc.)"  The truth and fairness has nothing to do with it.

DeLorean and his reputation will never be cleared in the publics mind because telling the
truth does not make money.

Just look at Enron, Global Crossings, Waste Management, Middle West Utilities, Drexel
Burnham Lamber-Junk Bonds, World Com,  Tyco Industries, Resolution Trust Corporation
Bailout............

you put too much faith in the delorean.
the only reason the delorean is still around is because it's cool. it was no
better designed that any other of the cars at the time. the man had some
good ideas, but he failed... miserably. The car would not last forever, as
he intended, without our (the fans) intervention. the stainless panels were
never aligned properly initially. and most EVERY aspect of the car is more
prone to failure than other normal cars, even in 1982, and even compared to
first funs of other older cars.

any car would stand the test of time and last like the delorean, if it was
dream car of all of it's owners.... like the delorean is.

i love the car too, but much was to be sacrificed to own one.... look at new
cars. the t-bird has had no real problems after it's first year of release.
more than half all dmc-12s were brought in on warrenty thier first few
years. you may pawn that off on the poor quality ofthe irish workers or
delorean's limited funding, or the fact that not ownly was it the car's
first run but the company's first car... fine... but the fact remains... it
was poorly constructed.... perhaps designed well and with good intentions...
but it failed in the production. deloreans are of better quality now that
they were 20 years ago.

it's a beautiful work of art... a masterpiece of auto-aesthetics and yes, a
step forward even the mechanical and functional *design* in some areas.
Other areas were thrown together and poorly designed... and almost all parts
of the car were poorly built.
I hope this passes the moderator. it should. i love the car as much as all
of you, don't doubt... i like the challenge of turning a
substandardly-built, but awesome looking car... into a dream machine.

The control pressure regulator is a thermostatic pressure regulator. That
means it varies the fuel pressure with changes in engine temperature. There
is a thin metal disk inside the regulator that covers the two fuel ports.
When the diaphragm inside flexes it moves the metal disk open and closed
controlling the fuel flow between the two fuel ports regulating the fuel
pressure on the outlet side. This metal disk is also affected by a change in
intake manifold vacuum, such as when accelerating. An electric heater inside
the CPR helps to open the regulator thereby increasing the control pressure
and leaning out the fuel mixture.

My question really related to what this thing does (well, okay, I know what
it does, but
I've little understanding of HOW). And why this apparently spotlessly
clean unit could cause a massive blockage. I took it apart, cleaned and
blew it out, but can't see how it actually works!

I installed that same Kenwood headunit into my D this summer.  I absolutely
love it.  On my lastest CD i have in the car it has 160 songs on it.  I have
to fill the car up with gas a couple of times before i hear the same song
twice.  I did not get the DIN bracket from Houston, instead I took a dremel
tool to the old bracket and just kept grinding the metal down until I could
finally fit the cd/mp3 player into the bracket, which resulted in a nice
tight fit.

Email me if you have you questions, also my website may be able to help you.

[Moderator Note: This thread is generating many responses, like this one,
discussing cars other than the DeLorean.  So many that I shall soon slam
the door on it.  These posts have merit, but they only appeal to a small
audience.  - Mike Substelny, moderator of the week]

Well, I agree that the new T-bird has had no problems, but there is no
way to compare it to a 20+ year old car.  Heck, my wife's PT Cruiser
also has no real problems in it.  I have no proof here, but I assume
that the T-bird is not a completely new car from the ground up.  I am
sure it has been blessed with previous engineering successes.
Look at the most reliable part of our D, the engine.  It was a proven
engine before being introduced in the DeLorean, and look how little
problems it has caused.
This thread comes up from time to time and all I keep looking at is a
1994 Dodge Ram I used to own.  It was the 1st year of the new (well old
now) design.  It had over 60 recalls on it since we got it.  Look at it
now only a few years down the road... "The Mayor Of Truckville".

I will never say it is a perfect car, but looking at it's roots, it has
faired better then most upstarts.
