Subject: DMC Sunshade rocks!
I love my Delorean, but it seems to think it should have lived it's life as
a pizza oven. I have been working with PJ Grady for several weeks to nail
down a small freon leak in the AC unit, but so far we have had no luck.
To keep cool in the mean time, I decided to order one of the custom fit
window shades from DMC Houston. Let me say this.....IT MAKES A BIG
DIFFERENCE! The fact that the shade sits outside the window means that no
sunlight magnifies through at all. The inside temp. of the car today was
great, and it helps protect the interior without having to get a dashboard
mat.
Just wanted to let you all know in case you were pondering getting one for
yourself.
P.S. i am thinking of modifying the shade slightly. I want to put an
elastic band that goes across the top part from torsion bar to torsion bar
(something that will stretch tight, and have velcro in the middle to hook
together) This should give it a slightly snugger fit on the top.

Just a reminder that the Eurofest show is coming up soon. Registrations will be taken up to Oct. 14. We need to try to have a strong showing this year. There is rumor that the DeLorean might be next years featured marque, but to do this, we really need to have everyone come that can! Especially you guys in Atlanta. The event starts the evening of Oct. 19 (Friday) and ends the 21 (Sunday) with the show itself taking place on the 20th. The show is a full day event and is absolutely fabulous. Any European car can be involved - not just British! It takes place on the BMW assembly plant grounds. Hello Blake....
I have been working with engine conversions for many years, mainly in the
Pontiac Fiero. In these cars my choice is the 3800 S/C but when
it came around to the Delorean I chose the Cadillac Northstar. Being
an aluminum block/heads it replaces the old 2.8 PRV with only 35 lbs
addition in weight. This is far less than the 3800 would be...
Also the 3800 has far higher low end torque than the N* and would be
harder on the transmission. Looking at the spec. sheets they are a
close match but in the car you can tell a large differance. The DMC
transmission ( as does any ) is sensitive to torque loading and the
lesser amount at low RPM will allow longer transmission life.
Since I completed the conversion about 2 years ago G/M has produced a
V-6 version of the N* and is a far better match to the DMC.
The N* is almost ( watch the strong replies come in ) over-kill for
it at 300 hp. The 210 hp out of the 3.5 TOHC V6 Version, lighter weight
( 50 or more lbs.) and shorter length will make it ideal ( my opinion )

It is ALWAYS a bad idea to install a fuse that is higher that what was
there previously unless you know every piece of wire and connection in
the circuit is good for the higher rating.
If for some reason you sustain 14.5A for a extended period of time on
the circuit, and the wires are only rated for 10A... you got yourself a
fire!
Maybe someone else on the list is more familiar with that circuit than
I, and confirm if (or not) the wires and connections can handle 15A.

I thought the Gold DeLorean in the bank in Snyder was one of the two original
American Express cars. Also the one in the bank in Snyder had a black
interior. The other American Express car has the saddle interior and is in a
museum. The third gold DeLorean is the one in Maryland and it is for sale
and was at the Cleveland show. It was the last one made using spare panels
originally produced for the two original cars and also has a saddle interior.
Reading the article on Joe's website it says the car for sale in Maryland
was the one in the Snyder Bank. Didint seem correct to me but I may be wrong.

How to figure out the load:
I(ampere) = P(watt) / U(volt)
(P = total power of the lights in the circuit)
Keep in mind that the wires may not be built for more than 10A - and might melt or take fire.

I would love to hear more about your Cadillac Northstar engine conversion.
Can you say what models & years Cadillac have these engines? Were you able
to hook up all the associated electronics to allow the engine to run on
'limp home' mode with no radiator coolant?
I was talking to a local Camero affectionado who thinks that his LS-1 block
is the same size as the Northstar V8. Is this so? He says that the block
is available in aluminum. If it would fit, it would make a lot more sense
to use since more aftermarket parts are available. I just don't see old men
at car shows tricking out their Caddies like I do with kids & their Chevys.
I would like to consider installing a front wheel drive engine &
transmission in place of the DeLorean stuff. Has anyone considered this
idea? If the drive axle doesn't line up then I suppose an extra set of CV
joints with interconnecting axles held on bearings should work just fine.
I'm not afraid to do whatever it takes.

It could be that the wire running to the third brake lite is pinched
and is blowing the fuse (which may be why it was disconnected).
Disconnect it and see if the fuse holds. I reccomend that where you
tap off for the third lite that you stick a separate fuse just for the
third lite itself. Now if the wire gets grounded you still have your
origional lites going. As for the third brake lite you should install
an L.E.D. type. They have a very low current draw and are very bright
and noticeable. NEVER overfuse. Mount the lite as high on the rear
louvre as you can and use double stick tape. Carefully route the wire
as it has to pass many sharp edges. Leave enough slack so the louvre
opens without streching the wire and you can remove and install the
plastic valence strip. Make sure you get a good ground connection.
This is one of the cheapest and best things you can do to make the car
more noticeable to other drivers. Another simple and inexpensive tip
is to add tiny convex mirrors (with double stick tape again) to the
side rear view mirrors. These will help increase your visibility to
the rear.

since it was supposedly the only one with the

makes it sound like it was the one from Snyder Bank.
I thought the Snyder Bank D was one of the two AMEX
cars (with gray or black interior, I'm not sure).
This web site with pictures of the gold Snyder
Delorean shows the interior being either black or gray
(hard to tell with the lighting...looks black to me).
Is the AMEX car still in Snyder or, if it is gone,
where is it? The pics on Joe's website don't look
like they are of the same car.
Curious minds want to know.

Your problem is related to the idle speed circuit. Check to be certain the idle speed motor is operational. This is easily accomplished by disconnecting and reconnecting the idle speed motor electrical connection while the engine is at idle. If there is no change in the idle speed during this test your idle speed motor or associated electrical circuit may be defective.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from past postings on the DML I believe the Northstar engine conversion has a price tag of around $20,000.
I believe that this information should me mentioned along with the technical specifications. Personally I think that anytime a single system replacement, that being the drivetrain in this situation, exceeds the price of the entire vehicle; questions should be raised as to weather this would be a cost effective conversion.

The (non-locking) gas caps ar very cheap...about $10 from a DMC parts
vendor. If you want to clean it up the best way is glass bead it or
you can use a dremel tool. To keep it from rusting again, paint it
with some POR-15...I used this on my chassis (had the entire thing
sandblasted then I painted it with the POR-15) and it is FANTASTIC!
never have a rust problem again and it is just as strong as powder
coating.

The second annual DeLorean Fall Foliage Tour has finally been
scheduled. This should be the largest DeLorean event in the Northeast
this fall!
This year it will be a two day event Saturday & Sunday October 27th
and 28th.
On Saturday the event starts at PJ Gradys in West Sayville N.Y.
This is guaranteed to be interesting to all DeLorean Enthusiasts
We will then depart from PJ Gradys and Caravan out to the East End of
Long Island.
This will include a driving tour with stops along the way in the
Hamptons and finish at the end of Long Island at the Montauk Light
house. We will have dinner in Montauk and Caravan back to

Like the exhaust tips! My '82 has these great looking exhaust tips.
I've recently purchased an '83 and it has just the polished
pipes...pathetic! Does anyone have a lead to emulation tips? Pipes are
about 1 3/4" OD, Tip OD is about 2 1/2" (slant cut, of course). Please
help if you can, I'm burning up a lot of time in this hunt. (Or hey, if
you're destroying something that you can remove the tips from that might
work too, I'm open).

With the exception of fuse # 7, all of the circuit fuse ratings are conservatively rated. Concerning the brake light circuit, one extra bulb will not overwhelm the 10 amp fuse. The 15 amp fuse will continue to provide overload protection therefore you can continue to use that fuse in the brake light circuit.
CAUTION: When replacing fuses in the fuse block inspect the condition or the fuse connectors for the fuse you are replacing. Any signs of corrosion, overheating, or distortion will require replacement with a heavy duty in- line fuse replacement. Additionally any signs of melting of the fuse block for that particular fuse will also require an in-line replacement.
