A while back someone reported a rumor that our beloved Yokohama AVS
Intermediate tires were soon to be discontinued.  Apparently this has
come to pass.  Last week I went to tirerack.com to order a set and
discovered to my dismay that (unlike 3 weeks earlier) the front tires
are no longer available (as of today they still have the rears). I
called the friendly people at Tirerack.com and they said that the
tire was discontinued and they could no longer get new stock. They
gave me the customer service number at Yokohama Tires, who confirmed
this claim.  They said they were receiving a lot of irate calls. I
asked if a replacement tire was in the works. They replied that they
thought so, but have received no concrete information. They said that
this suggests that a new product was at least a year away.

In a mild panic, I started calling around everywhere.  Things were
looking grim until I finally called my local Sears Auto Center, who
were able to special order a set of 4 tires, which I just picked up.

Sooo, if you will be needing tires soon,  you might want to act quickly.

Is there an easy way to put shocks on the rear of my D. It was riding really
rough and I decided to check to see if they were worn out. BIG MISTAKE, I
also never got the spring compressed enough to get the shocks back on the
car.

The shocks were not worn out but were really stiff, too stiff. That was what
was causing the really rough ride. What's the best shock to put back on the
car. I don't want to put the OE shock back on.

Christian,

The problem you are describing is very rare in the DeLorean, this is probably the reason why you could not find any information.

The voltmeter and battery are connected to two separate circuits both with direct run connections, this reduces the probability of problems from the source components to the effected instruments. The single common connection point is at the rear of the instrument cluster inside the binnacle.

  Yesterday morning I started my car and backed out of the garage. Before I
  was even off my block I noticed that my battery light was on and that my
  volt gauge is at 0. I put the car back in the garage and took another car
  (luckily a friend of mine is on vacation and he's storing his car at my
  house).

  The car started fine (yesterday and today), the fuel pump is running
  strong, the radio (aftermarket) is working, the vent fans are working...
  is this just a fluke with the gauge?

  Where should I begin looking to fix this problem? I searched the archives,
  but I can only find mentions of low gauges or problems when idling - no
  mentions of zero volts.

Subject: More fan troubles

I've been following everyone's fan troubles for a while now and I haven't
seen anyone with my exact problem, so I thought I'd speak up. My fans stay
on ALL the time. I stepped out last night late just to test (the car hand't
been driven all day) and turned the key... sure emeough. The fans came on.
I'm thinking it's a bad coolant switch, but could it also be the thermostat?

If these fans are on during cranking, could they drain the battery enough to
make it difficult to start? Since I noticed this problem the car has been
difficult to start.

I have good news, for some of you at least.  With the help of a car
enthusiast friend, I recently discovered that Cooper Cobra G/T's come in both
sizes for the DeLorean!  I got a complete set and I am very happy with the
ride and performance.  They are very attractive, with an aggressive tread
that is very similar to the Yokahamas.

I took some pictures of my Coopers beside a friend's Yokos at The Stainless
Show and Shine in London, Ontario a few weeks ago.  It was hard to tell the
difference between the tires.  Unfortunately, my pictures came out poorly.  I
will try to take more and post them in the vault soon.

Unlike Yokahama, Cooper Tire is an American company based here in Ohio.  They
are not far from my office.  My Cobra G/Ts were less expensive than Yokos,
too.

Sadly for the speed demons, the Cooper Cobras have a speed rating of T
(maximum speed 118 mph), not V (maximum speed 149) like the Yokos.  I do not
expect this to affect me at all.  If my DeLorean ever gets close to 118 mph,
my tires will be the least of my worries!

Specs for the two tires I got (I think) are:

P195/60R14  85 T  440 A B

P235/60R15  98 T  440 A B

As you can see, the Cooper Cobra G/Ts only have a T speed rating and a B
temperature rating, so don't take them to the race track.  However, they have
a 440 treadwear rating, so under normal conditions they will last much longer
than the Yokahamas (160 treadwear rating).  It is not surprising that both
tires have an A traction rating, as their tread patterns are so similar.

Cooper Cobra G/Ts are plentiful, less expensive, longer lasting, look great,
and have a wonderful ride for a daily driver DeLorean.  But remember, they
are *not* suitable for anyone who pushes their DeLorean to its limits (or
beyond).

        I recently got a closer look at the underbody of my D and found
        a major problem, my front crumple frame (This may not be the correct
part name)
        is very badly rusted and beyond repair. I see that DMC Huston
doesn't have any listed.
        Help ! Is this part out of stock ?
        Do you think that this part could be made at a local metal shop ?.

This morning I left for work, and just a block away, the volt gauge

past 80, the battery light flickered and went off. I got back home and
found that the #5 fuse had blown again.

Why would this keep happening? The DeLorean is my daily driver. It's also
the only car I have in California. Is the car safe to drive, or is this a
symptom of a deeper electrical problem that could affect other circuits?

Hello All,

   Today, I set out to fix my loose power antenna bracket.. and upon
removing the charcoal canister, there was a dry-rotted rubber cap on a
fitting on the top of the canister labeled "CARB BOWL".  The rubber cap was
too rotted to keep... so my question is, should I find a replacement?  Does
it serve any purpose?  What happens if I leave it off?

If your clutch master and slave cylinder have over 10k miles on them there is a good possibility that the seals are failing due to a chemical change in the old fluid when it mixed with the new fluid. The other possibility is that there are air bubbles trapped in the fluid line.

Thoroughly bleed the system, if the problem still persists replace both the clutch master and slave cylinders.

  Before I installed the stainless hydraulic line, my clutch used to grab
  right off the floor.  After I installed it the clutch now grabs at the top
  of the pedal travel and feels very weak.  Is this normal?  The car had a new
  centerforce clutch at 56,000 miles and it's only got 61,000 now so it
  shouldn't be worn yet (I'm extremely easy on it).  Is there a way to adjust
  it?  The old manual I have says the pedal free-play isn't adjustable, but
  there's a nut on the master cylinder shaft that I can turn up or down.
  Moving it doesn't seem to do anything so I'm wondering if I have to
  disconnect the rod from the clutch pedal, twist it down, and then reattach
  it?

  Everyone's help is greatly appreciated!

My car hasen't had any problems really since I changed the thermostat.
When I bought it the owner (orignal I might add) said Check the coolent,
Break fluid and oil. You'll need to top them off once a week.
Well, every one knows that a car shouldn't use that much of any fluid, it
shouldn't use anything!
So I did an oil change the copper washer was missing Leaky without it.
I checked the "Break Fluid" it was fine it was the clutch that was leaking.
It despertly needed a slave cylinder and a new clutch line.
Last but not least the Overheating problem.
When I got the car the Temp guage was inoperable. A little wire tracing
located a bad connection in the engine compartment, near the coil.
With that fixed I could better monitor the coolent temp. Well the engine got
HOT and the radiator was Ice cold.
Hmmmmmm.
  I changed the antifreeze, used Prestone silver better for alunmum,
Still had the problem. I replaced the thermostat that was stuck closed. All
my problems solved.

PJ Grady sells a repro section that has to be welded on. It ain't
particularly cheap, until you price replacing the frame. Then it
looks pretty good!
