What you have done is great for several reasons. First off you had nothing
to loose my doing the repair yourself, because if the repair did not work,
you just fall back to the idea of replacing the item. Next you have just
learned something about the car that makes it tick. Although I have not had
this problem, I have made such repairs as reinforcing the window regulators
and rebuilding the window switches. There are some out there that have
insisted that this is not the proper way to repair a car and that the only
true fix is to replace the parts with new. But if you can take it apart, see
how it works and repair or improve the design to make it work better than
new, at a lower expense try it.

In the latest DeLorean World, editor David Knudson responded to a letter
to the Editor which discussed a number of things, including the DML. In
it, he said:
" . . . [the DML's] major disservice is that it communicates
the impression of a problem-prone automobile to those
people around the world who are interested in purchasing
or studying it."
This subject has come up many times since I became a DML subscriber in
'96. Obviously people will tend to discuss their mechanical problems on
the DML. We are all less motivated to discuss the good things that
happen. No one posts a message like "I drove my DeLorean today and had
no problems" except as a joke.
Thus, every few months we have a thread about good DeLorean
experiences. Now seems like the perfect time for one of these. I will
start:
In 1998, a huge number of DeLoreans drove to Ken Koncelik's Car Show in
Cincinnati. These 72 cars drove tens of thousands of miles in one
week. In all that, I only know of one problem, a minor radiator leak
that was fixed before the weekend was over. Not too shabby for 17 year
old cars!
As a part of the show, 24 DeLoreans drove in a caravan from Cincinnati
to Columbus. I just watched my video tape of that spectacle again, and
it was an amazing sight! About 25 more DeLoreans made the two hour
drive before the caravan left. Everyone had a great time and no one had
any mechanical problems.

Subject: Firewall Fuse Block
Just wondering if anyone could tell me if there is supposed to be anything
connected to the bottom left side prong on the fuse block that is on the left side
of the firewall in the engine compartment. I can't find any loose wires hanging any-
where so I doubt that anything is supposed to be connected to it but I thought I
better ask just in case.
Also, My lambda light is on so I the first thing that of was that it is probably
the oxygen sensor gone bad since I've always had bad luck with them on other
cars that I've had in the past but I was wondering if there might be something common
other than the sensors that may be the problem before I order a new one.
One other thing while I'm at it. Can someone break down the VIN# and tell me
what all the letters and numbers mean?
Well, I need to get the car detailed a little. I'm off to an open house tonight at a car
dealer just outside Indianapolis. There is supposed to be a guy bringing his F-40 there.
Gotta see it. Thanks for all the help.

My good Delorean experiences:
1. Looking over while driving down the road only to see a camera stuck out
of another car, taking a picture of me and my D while we both travel down
the road.
2. The fact almost everyone thinks the car cost close to 100K when in fact
I paid 8K for it. Pull up to the front of a store, step inside for a
sec and watch the crowd gather.
3. Seeing the kid's reaction when I drop my daughter off at school.
4. It starts everytime and has never left me stranded.
5. MOST IMPORTANTLY! - Having such a knowledgable and accessible group of
fellow owners to draw from and get such speedy solutions to my
problems...........Thanks DML, you're the main reason I can list # 4!

I bought my car in late 1999. It had sat in a warehouse in Florida for
somewhere close to ten years. when I got it, it had 42,000 miles on it. I
added a cold start valve, a warm up regulator, and a computer governor. The
car now has almost 70,000 miles on it, and has never turned it's back on me,
with the exception of a minor incident involving a tear in the pickup hose.
Anyone may feel free to argue with me, but there is no feeling in the world
like taking a thing with this much beauty and bringing it back to life. Nor
is there a feeling close to driving through a classic car show full of 57
chevy's and 68 mustangs, only to pop open the doors and have a crowd form
around you. That's a good DeLorean experience.

Subject: Living the (glovebox) nightmare...
Ok, so it isn't a nightmare, but I'm just started to live the dream
when I bought my first Delorean VIN#1619 today, and not owning it more
than 30 minutes, did it start to break... Nothing major, but a major
bummer. The Glove Box latch broke - not the part on the door, but the
latch itself on the dashboard. It seems to have broken off and falls
into the dashboard. I can pull it up, but can't find what attaches it
to the chassis. Now the glove box won't close unless I wedge
something between the cracks.. looks real ugly.
Anyway, any suggestions on how to fix this? Looks like my first
weekend having the car will also be the first weekend project!

Two years ago, I found my 81 DeLorean for sale on the DML, and quickly
bought it from a man who lived two states away. It is such a great car
that after allowing my Dad to drive it, he decided he needed one of his
own. Two months ago he bought his 83 from a guy in town. Without the
tremendous help of the DML we would not be able to own and maintain these
DeLoreans. The DeLorean community is, for the most part, filled with
very intelligent, very friendly people...most of whom I've met through
this list. Neither my father nor I are members of the DOA because we do
not appreciate their attitude towards my friends who run the DML.

For myself, owning a DeLorean has been nothing but fun! I love the
reactions I get when I drive her in public, I once had a kid on his
bike follow me over a mile just to see my car. While filling up at a
gas station one time, a young executive guy asked me, "Why did you
choose a DeLorean, when you could obviously afforded a Lexus, or even
a BMW?" I responded, "Why not? Everyone else wants to be noticed, but
when was the last time anybody you know said, 'Hey look, there goes a
BMW!" The man quietly agreed and went back to filling his SL2! And I
have never been inside a car that's so comforable, long distances
just seem to blow by. Sure I may have had a thing or two on the car
that needed attention, but I've gone through worse. The one thing
that I can say with full confidence and honesty, is that unlike any
of the other cars that I and my family have owned, the DeLorean has
NEVER broke down and left me stranded! Ford, Chevy, Mazda, Honda,
Hyundai, Mercedes, Cadillac & Buick: all cars that at one time or
another broke down on someone in my family and left them stuck
somewhere! By now you can probably tell that I don't just like my
car, I'm fiercely proud of it! And I'd be willing to bet that a good
number of fellow owners out there feel the same way that I do. With
that said, I can understand where the DOA is comming from, to a
degree. On the DMC News website, there is the section, "Subscribers
Rides" that features photos of owners and their cars. Why not either
add to, or create a seperate section that displays all the positive
experiences that owners have had. Suggestions?

A couple of days ago, the drivers side window was comming off the
track when I would roll it up. I removed the door trim & corrected
the problem. But I noticed a "burning" smell when I removed the trim,
after a while the smell disapated. But could this be a warning sign
that my door lock module is malfunctioning? I don't have Lockzilla
installed, but my the locking system has been working fine. Does
anyone know of any tests I could perform to check the Central Locking
System?

Fellow DMCer's,
As the owner of the Delorean with the radiator leak at the last big Delorean
show, I must also comment on the Delorean. As with any car there is the usual
stuff to fix. But with this said, the feel while driving it is worth anytime
spent fixing the small stuff. Also where else could you get 72+ owners
willing to help you fix your car. Not only did I recieve lots of offers, but
Bob B, was willing to put my car on his trailer and take it to Ken's house,
Ken drove me to the warehouse in Columbus to get a new radiator, and Louise
K. help me install the new radiator. The Delorean owners are the kind of
people that are willing to help a fellow owner at anytime. Find that in any
other car make and I would be greatly surprised! Not only is the car a true
rolling work of art, but the people are the kind that I'm proud to call
friends!!!

Speed limits are more of a guideline than a rule. Drivers fit into 3
categories:
1. I Pass most cars, and seldom get passed.
2. I drive the speed of the cars around me.
3. I am passed by most cars and seldom pass others.
Most drivers are on category #2. I'm in category #1, unless I'm
lost, drunk, or in a strange place.

There were 4 DeLoreans at the annual "Route 66 Fun Run" when it was held in
Arizona earlier this month. Coming from Santa Barbara, Ventura, Pasadena and
West Covina, California, we met in Kingman, Arizona Friday night. Saturday
morning, we drove over to Seligman for the start of the rallye. There were over
800 cars registered for the drive from Seligman to Kingman. At the conclusion of
the drive, there was a car show for the participants in the center of Kingman.
Sunday's drive was the stretch of Route 66 from Kingman to Oatman Arizona
(almost to the California border). Together, these two drives are the longest
uninterrupted segment of Route 66 left. The road travels through the desert on
the original 2 lane highway with all its curves, bumps and switchbacks (real
narrow, while climbing the mountain into Oatman, especially with RV's coming at
you around blind corners and well over their lines.
The weekend was hot and extremely windy (which made the heat seem less). Not
even a hint of anyone running hot, not even warm and we all had the the A/C
going all weekend. Round trip mileage for the weekend averaged about 850 miles
(times 4 cars equals 3400 DeLorean Miles). Total problems: None. We all made it
home just fine and enjoyed every minute of the weekend. I can't say that for all
the Corvettes that were seen by the side of the road, though.

This is a great idea. I would like to tell the list that I bought my "D"
off the internet in Jan of this year. I made the deal over the telephone and
ask the previous owner if he thought I could drive Vin # 11596 from S.C to IL
without a breakdown. His immediate reply was that he would feel confident
enough to get in the car and drive it to CA from S.C. That was good enough
for me. I flew down to S.C. with no back up plans and drove my "D" 1,100
miles through a snow storm (by the way the rear engine drive handles superb
in snow) back to IL. Now I can't tell you that I didn't have minor things go
wrong. The only mechanical problems that I had that were the cars fault were:
* Speedo jumping from 0 to 100 about half way through the trip and finally
quiting.
* In S.C I didn't need a heater so it wasn't untill I got to about Nashville
that I realized my heater did'nt function properly. It got more than
nippy inside old 11596 from TN to IL.
* In S.C. I made the mistake of trying to use the emergency brake which must
have engaged and stayed engaged untill I got to Danville, IL. But two
good things happened as a result of this. I found out near Danville that
the brake warning light worked and thank my lucky stars I paid attention to
the light. Second I had the car up on a lift to check out the brakes and
discovered I had a punctured rear tire from glass or a nail. So for
$25.00 I got my tire fixed and emergency brake problem taken care of. I
later discovered I didn't have all the tools to change a flat tire. Can you
imagine how life would have been changing a tire for the first time in a
"D" in the middle of a major snow storm?
The fact of the matter is that I got in this special car that had been
stored outside for years with little to no care. Drove it 1,100 mile in two
days and had only very minor problems. For a car that is 18 years old and
not used daily or even regularly I think thats exceptional.

I just posted about my minor glovebox nightmare, but let me just add a few
comments to the "Good DeLorean Experiences" thread:
I've owned my car for about 5 hours now and about 120 miles, and just love
it. It has 17K miles, and drives really well. Sure, it has a few issues
that need to be address, but so would any other 19 year old car. Sure, it
took a little getting used to driving compared to my
comfortable-but-boring-and-character-less 95 BMW 325, but boy, is the D a
pleasure both driving and watching (and being watched). It certainly has
its quirks, but that's what I like about it - uniqueness and character.
I've spent the last year+ researching and learning as much as possible about
the car before buying, and the DML has been invaluable during that process.

I went out to disconnect the light on the glove box, and ended up taking the
thing apart and fixing the loose latch. Quite simple. So simple in fact, I
apologize for sending it to the list. DML Lesson #1: Try first, post later.
I did have one problem.. there seems to be a catch-22 when I went to
re-attach the knee pad to the body. I had removed the glove box first, and
then had easy access to the few bolts that held it on. But on re-assembly,
I had to re-install the glove box, then attach the latch, then attach the
knee guard, but at that point, I no longer had easy access to the two bolts
that hold it on that are directly in front of the glove box. Lots of finger
fumbling finally got them on.. Oh well, live, learn, dream.. I can't wait
for the next thing to fix.. (well, maybe I can).

I do want to warn you all that Ohio like Mike said is a traffic speed trap.
Today I went to Columbus and counted the cops and there were 14
Mile markers to watch on 71N
27, 50, 79,84,90,96 to Columbus
from Columbus Markers on 71N
115,140,165,169,175,215,205,218,224,230 and Lyndhurst just past W130th
this is a guarenteed speed trap in Cleveland
This does not mean that they are not elsewhere but these are the most common
ones
I got a ticket last week so I am living testimony.
This is the obstacle course part of the trip
If you safely navigate it you deserve a prize
have fun and be careful.

Dear DML,
Thanks to all of you who contribute to the list and make it a worthwhile
journey. The information on this list, sometimes incorrect/sometimes not, is
a great read and has contributed to another chapter in the history of the
DeLorean.
In addition, those who are unfamiliar with the DOA should really take a
closer look at the benefits of becoming a member. If it wasn't for the
DeLorean Owners, I wouldn't have, or many others wouldn't have, purchased a
DeLorean. If it were not for the DOA, I would have probably never went to the
DeLorean Factory in Northern Ireland etc. I'm sure that there are those out
there who feel the same way.
The DeLorean World magazine past issue package really has an enormous
amount of information and history all relating to the DeLorean. The magazines
and my membership have contributed to the continued success of the DeLorean
Car.
Additionally, thanks in part to the DML and the members of this list, I
have gained a better understanding of the enthusiasm and passion to own/drive
a DeLorean car.
The information and speed at which DeLorean information flows is truly
incredible. The assistance to help another owner, and the access to
information to help another owner in need, again exemplifies the real meaning
of DeLorean ownership.
Fellow owners, we are in the DeLorean saga together. The real meaning for
some of us DeLorean owners is the Esprit de Corps or Spirit of the Group
whatever or whoever that group may be.
Some owners like myself enjoy reading the DeLorean World and the DML.
Some owners like Ken's show and some like the annual DeLorean Expo's that the
DOA hosts. Again, it is the Spirit of the Group.
All of us can benefit by helping and promoting each other. Neither of us
benefit by trying to discredit and harass each other.

When I purchased my Delorean, I had to drive it 372 miles home, was stuck in
a traffic jam, sitting still for 1-2 hours in 80+ degree weather. It took
10 hours for
me to arrive home. My Delorean had no problems at all. A week later I
drove it
another 255 miles. Again with no problems. My kids and I love it. I
have also
dropped my 9 year old off at school, and he was the talk of the class.
People come
up to me all the time, asking questions. I help raise money for the
Childrens
Miracle Network ( Childrens Hospital ), one person offered to give me a
donation
if I would give him a ride in it. These people on the DML help each other,
like
family. Even real family members give bad advice sometimes. That is part of
it.
It does not matter what the DOA or the editors in Delorean World thinks.
It's
the thought of helping other Delorean owners, that is the most important
thing.

Many of us (including myself) would highly recommend that when you are
looking for a DeLorean to buy, don't buy the first one. Look at several
others as you probably won't have any others around to compare to. Well, I
broke the rule. When I drove the car, I fell in love. The car had sat for
many years and had the fuel problems, but the previous owner fixed them all.
The only apparent mechanical problem was the brakes pulled to the left (gunk
in the lines as I found out). I decided to buy the car and proceeded to
drive it from Washington D.C back to Knoxville, TN. No problems - in fact,
the car drove better and better after every gas stop. How many other used
cars around (18 years old no less) would you feel confident in driving
approx. 450 miles after simply test driving. The car was and is still
beautiful and mechanically sound. I would never hesitate on taking it on a
trip to anywhere in the country.
I only wish that I had deeper pockets and more room in the garage for
another D!

Group, As all knows DMCJOE is an expert in the field of De Lorean he needs no
conformation by me or any one else. But I did what he said about a month ago.
Went out and bought a 25Volt dc analog panel meter, already had a digital
multimeter, and after all the hook ups and cleaning connections, taking fuses
in and out confirmed my gauge on the car is 1/2 volt down, after all I did I
got it to about 3/10 's of a volt above the dash reading. I also took
pictures of all this an will post after the web site goes up.
