Marc,
Your statement about the air being so clean was an  accurate observation.
During the power outage,  the coal  fired power plants were shut down.
An airplane fly over of the  atmosphere was done during those days as
part of a program studying the  transport of coal fired power plant
emissions.
The results  of the air monitoring on these days was shocking.   Yes,
sulfur  dioxide levels dropped 90%,  BUT THE BIG SURPRISE was OZONE
levels  dropped 50% in the upper transport layer.   THIS WAS TOTALLY
UNEXPECTED.   Everyone has always blamed OZONE on automobile  polution.
However, this layer of the atmosphere should not have  experienced this
much of a decrease.  The conclusion was that power  plant chemical
emissions significantly added to OZONE  problems.
This was an argrument that I had with a college professor in  1972.   The
Ozone level increase tracked coal use and auto use,  but he would not
agree that coal was also a source of ozone  precusors.    Well, after all
these years, the research finally  showed what I argued 25 years. ago.

Amen,I am a boilermaker by trade, for the uninformed out there,  boilermakers
build and repair ( among other things) power plants of all kinds.  The coal
fire power plants produce about 60% of our nations power. The  government is so
concerned with reducing the emissions of auto like our beloved  Deloreans and
turn their backs on power plants. The power industry gives  billions of
dollars a year to both parties, this is why the clean air act was  gutted. This act
would have forced the power industry to clean up these plants,  but Mr. Bush
and all the men before him were so indebted to the power industry  that they
gutted the clean up bill. Example one plant here in Alabama burns  millions of
tons of coal a month, just think of the junk going into our air from  one
plant, and my state has 10 coal fired plants. Nation wide the power industry
pollutes more in a day than all the automobiles do in a year, gentlemen cars
aren't our problem, to clean up our air we must clean up these plants.
